Default Cannot run Internet Explorer

I usually use FireFox as my web browser, and at some point in the past IE
stopped working. I have tried downloading IE7 and IE8 at different times and
installing them. They seem to go through the complete installation
procedure, but no desktop icon shows up and when I try to run either nothing
happens. I get the arrow/hourglass cursor for a few seconds and then the
computer is back waiting for a command. I tried reloading SP2 from the CD
and it wouldn't load because it said the version running was newer than the
version on the CD, obviously because of the automatic updates. What can I do
to get some version of IE that works? This is on my desktop computer, I have
both on my laptop and they seem to co-exist fine on it. Help, please.

Thank you,

TRCSr

Why bother while you have Firefox? IE is very net-nanny-ish & full of
"holes" bug-wise.

IE7 (or IE8) not running? A blessing in disguise, if you ask me.

However, assuming you need IE7 or 8 (for updates) here is what I would
do. (Question - Before installing IE7, were you having problems with
IE6? You do not say whether you are running on XP or Vista.)

My suggestion is to uninstall IE7 (or IE8) -- using the usual Add/Remove
procedures. This will leave behind IE6 (uninstalable). Try running IE6
and see if it runs correctly.
If there are still problems, refer to the following page, where IE6
self-repair procedure is explained.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378.

Once you have IE6 running OK, try updating IE8.

Default Cannot run Internet Explorer

I have run into occasions where the website will only work with IE. However,
I have not had any version of IE on this computer for a long time -
basically since I discovered FF. The Add/Remove programs does not show any
version of IE, so when I try to go to IE7 or IE8 there is nothing to
upgrade. I tried to load IE off my XP main CD and it would not load
anything! Thanks for the suggestions anyway.

Yes, I went to the link you suggested and tried to download IE7, but it is
the same file I downloaded before and ran and it did not install IE7 like it
was supposed to. It only showed up in the "Programs" menu and when I clicked
on it nothing happened. Any more suggestions? Thanks for your help.

This is not the MVP site despite its fake logos.

The correct MVP site is http://www.mvps.org/.
