Try a complete uninstall and reinstall of the unit....

On reboot, install updated drivers from the Canon website BEFORE connecting
the all in one unit to the PC.

Unfortunately, Canon has delayed releasing the drivers for the MF5550.
I actually want to purchase this unit, and after noticing no drivers
available for download, contacted customer support about this. They
said that the XP driver hasn't passed QA yet, and as a result, has not
been posted on the web site yet.

It very well may be that your problem is related to the initial
version of the driver that you installed on the CD. You should try
contacting Canon support and see if they can provide any help. I was
told that they can email you a beta version of the latest and greatest
driver.
