The error message is:

"Setup could not verify the integrity of update.inf. Make sure that the
cryptographic service is running on this computer."

The cryptographic service is definitely running.

I tried the recommendations of http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=326815
with no effect. I also tried a repair install of XP + sp1. This also did
not solve the problem.

The contents of %systemroot%\KB823980.txt are as follows:

Service Pack started with following command line:

What else can I do to resolve this problem?

Regards,

George.

OK George, this is what you have to do

1. Turn off System Restore
2. Go "Start Run" then type "CMD" this will load a command prompt
3. Type the following in sequence that I typed, please don't type the
stuff inside brackets!

(this will reset the Cryptographic service)
net stop cryptsvc
ren c:\windows\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2
net start cryptsvc
(this will re-register some necessary dll files)
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 sccbase.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll

Now type exit to close the command prompt

one last thing to do before you start the update is to turn the
"System Restore" back on!! or else the update will not work, you will
get the exact same message! So turn on SYSTEM RESTORE. Trust me, past
experience, major pain

Best of luck
Mitch
