Saying that a tail is a leg doesn't make it a leg. although the quote is usually attributed to lincoln, he didn't actually say it. |

BT is spec'd for 10 meters max, for class 2 devices, which are the most common. class 1 can go further, but they're rare. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluetooth#Uses Officially Class 3 radios have a range of up to 1 metre (3*ft), Class 2, most commonly found in mobile devices, 10 metres (33*ft), and Class 1, primarily for industrial use cases,100 metres (300*ft). Bluetooth Marketing qualifies that Class 1 range is in most cases 20*30 metres (66*98*ft), and Class 2 range 5*10 metres (16*33*ft). 'tho it seems to exceed that sometimes. because it can. |

Not all. Broadband routers do have WiFi almost always. that's what i said. Modems, which connect to a single computer, do not. modems are obsolete. Maybe in the USA, but many people are using them. Hint: a modem doesn't necessarily mean a POTS thing. Rather, a fibre or cable thing, doing perhaps 100 Mbps. You may call such a thing a modem, and you are far from alone. Many people call that cable thing a "modem," but they are wrong. The word "modem" is short for MODulator-DEModulator. It's a device that translates an analog signal into a digital one, and vice versa. Cable is digital to begin with, so there is no translation necessary. Coming back to this point: What makes you say "Cable is digital to begin with, ...."? Assuming with "cable", you mean the coax cable part of a cable network (mostly a HFC network). that part is analog, not digital. The signals on the coax cable are analog signals, use RF, use analog signal splitters, etc.. As to a cable modem not having a modulator/demodulator: DOCSIS, i.e. cable modems, uses QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) and hence *do* contain a demodulator (for the downstream) and a modulator (for the upstream). Some references: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DOCSIS#Physical_layer (mentions the 'Modulation:' used) "DOCSIS and Cable Modems How it works :: Advanced RF" https://volpefirm.com/docsis101_advanced-rf |

I bought a router at a hamfest, even though I didn't need it, because it looked xactly like mine and I figure if mine failed, I could just swap t hem. well the power supply failed and I went to the other one and I saw it didn't come with a power supply. But then I noticed it didnt' have an antenna. But it has 4 output jacks for internet cables. Modems, which connect to a single computer, do not. There are cities where you get a (single) RJ11 socket to connect your computer to the wall in the flat. But no WiFi. Maybe he doesn't live at his home, so he can not contract Internet.Maybe he connects via mobile and USB. the other home probably has internet. What other home? Ask him. Maybe he will tell, maybe not. :-) i did. It does not matter to me. obviously. Good! -- Cheers, Carlos. |

Function is more important than operation. That's why we still talk about the "shift lever" even though it no longer shifts the gears in an automatic transmission. Just to throw another word into the mix, I'm on WISP which means I don't have a "modem", per se. I have a transceiver! I've learned never to tall that to any customer support people for routers, or Ooma, or Vonage, etc. I just tell them I have a "modem" and then they're happy. I learned never to tell such a person that I use Eudora. The Care and Feeding of Customer Support People is very important. |

I thought "Finally! This is EXACTLY what I need for my upcoming trip down-under!", but the website says "This item does not ship to Netherlands."! So now I'll have to put my whole laptop upside-down when I'm in Oz, which will make it very akward to use! Bummer! |

What, nospam said something I agree with? That's a first! And yes, I know that when usage gravitates toward something that is incorrect, the error becomes established after a while. That's part of the nature of the history of all languages. There are many such example in English. But I'm an old fuddy-duddy, and I object to such changes. I know that sooner or later, I'm going to lose on almost all such issues, but that doesn't mean I have to like them. The trouble with what he said, above, is that he's using an adverbial clause as the subject of a sentence. Adverbs should be used to modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs, not as nouns. There are two ways to say it correctly: That people call it a modem doesn't make it a modem. It isn't a modem just because people call it a modem, Using it the way he does, which is commonplace but incorrect, is equivalent to using the word modem for things which are not modems, also commonplace but incorrect. |
