Thanks. I like Libreoffice better but that's me. I've used Kingsoft too and it works okay. How about backup software to do images to a USB HD? Macrium reflect isn't that hard once YOU setup the backup. All she would do is plug in the drive and open the icon and click backup. www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx |

Installed: Spybot Anti-beacon Some other choices: http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/deta...10_spying.html http://pxc-coding.com/portfolio/donotspy10/ (*) http://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10 (*) Employs OpenCandy but that exists only during installation. Just say No to any offers. When the install is done, OpenCandy is gone. It's just a dynamic means of making a smaller installer with bundleware rather than bloating the size of the installer to include the bundleware. Classic Shell That means this neighbor will learn the GUI that you choose, like Win7, rather than learn the Win10 GUI. Yes, this will ease migration to Win10 but then you did not say this neighbor was even using a computer before. When they call for tech support or post in newsgroups, they will be told how to perform a fix using a GUI with which they are unfamiliar. They will remain clumsy with the native GUI. Kingsoft Free Office Suite That became adware a couple years ago. It's not adware that occupies a fixed spot in some config screen but shoves popups in your face on occasion to get you to buy their stuff. That's why I won't use other products with which Kingsoft has become affiliated, like Cheetah Mobile anything (e.g., CM Security app for smartphones). They wait until they acquire sufficient marketshare and then switch sales schemes to promote their payware knowing the number of lost customers will be insignificant while they engender a large boost in sales revenue. I used Kingsoft Office suite on a laptop and my aunt used it. When Kingsoft went to adware, got rid of it and went to Softmaker's FreeOffice. Not their Office payware but their FreeOffice product; see www.freeoffice.com. Also has a mobile app version for use on a smartphone. Another free choice is LibreOffice (rather big program). Chrome Oh, your neighbor doesn't care about their privacy. Or lack of control over updating (unless you disabled ALL methods, including the scheduled tasks). If you rein in the misbehaviors of Google Chrome than it's okay; however, I have seen it switch auto-update stratagies that undid the tweaks I did to throttle them. Your neighbor will also be installing many extensions just to get the features already present as native options in IE, Edge, and Firefox, like new tabs (when clicking on links) get focus instead of loading in the background making the user that wants to see the page having to click on the tab to see it. As I recall, it took 6-10 extensions before Chrome had the same feature set as other web browsers. Their minimalism is too extreme. There are other Chromium-based web browser that are not so minimalistic (but I'd wait awhile before having noobs use Vivaldi). MBAM You made your neighbor pay for the full version that has an on-access (real-time) scanner? Or did you install the free version just so they would have a second-opinion scanner that they would run manually? Avira Free A-V Alas, the free version requires installing their adware toolbar to do web traffic interrogation. Avast Free includes web traffic scanning, and can even scan HTTPS web traffic, to check for malicious content. Disabled the lock screen This neighbor has no kids, no family, and never has friends come over that would "play" on his computer under his Windows account? Set up File History for backup How about a real backup program? Many are free. Have I forgotten anything important? Probably but your neighbor needs to come up with their own criteria, too. How about an adblocker for the web browser. Opera includes one but you'll need to add one for Chrome. Makes page loading faster and often facilitates easier reading of the page. Also eliminates confusion on some sites as to what is content from the site and what are ads. Too often the distinction between site and ad content is blurred or non-existent. For example, before Softpedia.com changed their page scheme, you might find a program you wanted to download but got blasted by 4 "Download" links that all looked alike so you didn't know which one to click to get what you intended to get. Adblockers cleaned up their site to remove that confusion. Lots of folks use Adblock Plus. I use uBlock Origin. |

Set up File History for backup How about a real backup program? Many are free. In my opinion Windows 10 File History is a great back up program. While it does not back up the system files, the odds are a normal user will never need the disk image. File History backs up and saves all version of your files. You can back up any folder on the hard drive, not just the My Documents folder as some think. Backup files are not encrypted, nor in a proprietary code. You can retrieve previous version on your file using Windows 10 File Explorer. It is easy to restore your files also. You can save to any storage media and if it is a laptop it will cache your file and back up when the disk is connected. |
