Installing Windows 10 This Weekend (!)
I got this email from a neighbor:
"I'll be giving you a call to clean up and get Windows 10 installed. " How do I respond to that? |

He probably wants to remove unnecessary software, registry entries and temporary files before performing the upgrade. It's not a bad idea. -- Silver Slimer Fingerprint: e58428b2633833a3b0c9bb7e40819166642245b7 Gab.ai: @silverslimer |

He can do an upgrade and hope it gets activated, then do a clean install. Forgive my ignorance, but what does she need to have to do an upgrade? Is an upgrade still possible? And how would she do a clean install? IOW, what file would she need? Thanks. |

Tell your pushy friend that you only do fresh (clean) installs. OK. What does she need for me to do that? Windows install DVD License Key Install media and license keys for all software to be reinstalled. New versions for all those incompatible...check BEFORE you start. Macrium Reflect software to image the drive BEFORE you start. External hard drive to hold the backup. Case of Kleenex for all the tears you're gonna cry. $$$$ to pay for all that. Time to do it. Lots more time to research/fix compatibility issues. New phone number for when you get tired of all the calls for help. When you fix a neighbor's computer, you become RESPONSIBLE for anything that doesn't work, now and in the future. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. This appears to be your first win10 install. There are many potential issues. IT WILL BE A DISASTER!!!!!! Get a few under your belt before you even think about helping someone else. Last count, I have win10 on 18 machines to get the free upgrade. I'm not using ANY of them. Too unstable. I fire one up when I'm bored, let it update, fret over all the new issues, put it back in the closet...two days gone. Run away. Run fast. Don't look back. You cannot win. |

Tell your pushy friend that you only do fresh (clean) installs. OK. What does she need for me to do that? Honestly, the best cleanups I've done have always been done in the following manner and in that order: - Remove all software the person doesn't need first - Unhide all files and folders (Control Panel - Appearance - File Explorer Options - Show hidden files and folders - Navigate to C:\Users\[Her user name]\AppData\ and remove the folders of programs that have been installed from the Local, LocalLow and Roaming folders - Download CCleaner, clean out everything including the registry entries - Go back to File Explorer, right-click on the hard disk and click Disk Cleanup, then Clean Up System Files... let it do its thing - Once done, in the same properties, go to Tools and Scan the Disk first. If it finds no errors, Optimize and Defragment the Hard Disk(s) - Finally, when all of that is done, complete the process by going into the Command Prompt in Administrative Mode (right-click command prompt, choose administrator) and then type is sfc /scannow to make sure that all of the files are intact. Once that is done, upgrade. That whole process will make sure that everything is spotless and minimize the chances of problems. -- Silver Slimer Fingerprint: e58428b2633833a3b0c9bb7e40819166642245b7 Gab.ai: @silverslimer |

If you don't, the Windows 10 ISO should still be available somewhere but I think that Microsoft now charges for the upgrade. -- Silver Slimer Fingerprint: e58428b2633833a3b0c9bb7e40819166642245b7 Gab.ai: @silverslimer |

I upgraded to Win 10 on 4 machines when the upgrade was free. Is it true that she can no longer use the free upgrade? It stopped being free at the end of July. The upgrade was available (forced on) to people between Windows 10's release date at the end of July 2015 to the end of July 2016. After that, it had to be paid for. -- Silver Slimer Fingerprint: e58428b2633833a3b0c9bb7e40819166642245b7 Gab.ai: @silverslimer |

Sounds to me like she's going to remind you to get your act together regarding personal hygiene and/or home cleanliness and finally perform that windows 10 upgrade you've been moaning about not having a large enough "Round Tuit" handy to complete the task. Perhaps she's found you a nice large "Tuit"? -- Johnny B Good |

wrote: I got this email from a neighbor: "I'll be giving you a call to clean up and get Windows 10 installed. " How do I respond to that? Depends entirely on what your relationship is with that neighbor, what your willingness to help is, and how confident you are with your skills. If you don't want to help, tell him that your skills aren't great enough to help (regardless of how great they actually are). |
