What OS do most non-USA computers come with nowadays?
Someone mentioned on the XP ng that all new non-Apple decently-powered
computers come with Windows 10 in the USA, which I concur. Sure, tablets exist, chromebooks exist, Linux and Macs exist, but that's not the question. The question is related to the fact that if you go to any "computer" store in the USA (Costco, Best Buy, Frys, whatever), and you buy a computer (not a tablet or chromebook), you're not going to get Windows-anything-but-10 on it by default. I'm just asking whether that's the same situation in the rest of the world. |

And AFAIK most online retailers will install anything you like, or nothing at all. -- One frigid morning in North Dakota a man turned up at work much the worse for wear. A few refurbs persist that may come with Windows 8 or 7, but they are increasing rare. Never XP any more. Massachusetts USA. |

I concur. I have yet to see in any major commercial store for at least the past year a Windows computer that *didn't* have Windows 10 installed. Thanks. In the USA, it's basically Windows, period. Sure, there might be really (really really really) old stock out there with an older windows, but that's not really the spirit of the question. Also online you can buy anything, where I'm sure you can buy a twelve-fingered Vietnamese baby online, but the spirit of the question is simply what's "normal" and "prevalent" in the world. A few refurbs persist that may come with Windows 8 or 7, but they are increasing rare. Never XP any more. Right. In the USA, what's normal and prevalent is Windows (latest), which, at this point, is Windows 10 (with a few leftover really really really old Windows 7 or 8 lying around). But what's it like in the rest of the world? |

In the USA, the OS is baked into the computer when it was born. Of course, you can probably buy three-legged Chinese babies online, so, I'm sure online you can get anything, but that's not the spirit of the question. If it's true that in the UK, the average Intel or AMD X86/X64 laptop/desktop does NOT come with Windows 10, that's interesting since they're all Windows 10 in the USA. |

That's your only choice in effect. Windows. If you want Linux, you can add that separately. But the computer comes with Windows. Whether you like it or not. So, I'm just asking what the business model is for the rest of the world's store-bought computers. |

AFAIK Dell will still sell you a new PC with Windows 7 Pro. (It will come with a Windows 10 Pro license and Dell downgrades the OS to Win7 at the factory.) Buying from Dell (or online) is a bit different from buying from a computer store. I've never bought a computer online. I only buy from stores. Even so, it's Windows or Windows so that's teh same thing since the question really is about the business model and not the specific version of Windows. In the USA, you get a computer with Windows. Period. You don't get any other choice at a store. If you don't want Windows, you're welcome to delete it and put on whatever you want (say Linux). But it comes baked in with Windows (generally the latest version at the time of manufacture). I was just asking if the business model is the same around the world where all the non-Apple computers in the store have Windows baked in out of the box. |

The spirit of the question was really about the business model of windows being on all USA (non-Apple) computers. It wasn't really about the exact version of Windows. My experience buying computers at stores is that the computers come with whatever Windows version was the "big thing" when the computer was made. Nowadays, that's Windows 10, but the question is what do the rest of the world use as their business model for the computers in the stores? |

But I just built a new box with Win7, using a perfectly legal disk bought online. And I saw a 2-page ad, I think it was in the NYT at Christmas, in the business section, for Dell. One page was Win10. One page was Win7. Dell is still targetting Win7 at business because business in general is avoiding Win10. Corporate IT people can't afford to be running hundreds of beta boxes that update themselves willy nilly to who-knows-what, and only "enterprise" licensees are fully free to prevent that. It's a similar situation to Vista/7. XP disks were still available for a long time. XP is probably still available. The difference this time is that business is so strongly resisting the Win10 services model that Win7 has to be available at retail. I don't know the details -- whether Dell is pressuring MS or whether MS is discreetly giving Dell the OK. But Dell is selling Win7 machines. I wouldn't be surprised if other companies are doing the same. Years ago Bill Gates said that he knew the Chinese were "stealing" Windows, but he figured he'd make them pay eventually, and in the meantime he preferred that they steal Windows rather than something else. The monopoly was paramount. It's probably similar with Win7: They plan to institute a services kiosk machine by hook or by crook. They'll wait as long as it takes. In the meantime, they don't want anyone getting used to going without Windows. I'm curious why the question is so important to you. |
