Yeah, I just fixed a machine that was misbehaving--by uninstalling
Chrome. After the uninstall it quit pausing every second or so and it
would again load updates.

(Since I saw no culprits I was looking through the task manager for
anything I could kill to see if it was the culprit. Something Chrome
runs at startup was the guilty party.)

Something else just happened now that I recall happening before
but did not associate it with anything else. In Xnews, when I
press the / key to jump to and open the next unread message,
sometimes it jumps to the message but does not open it. That
sounds like similar misbehavior.

Wild guessing... I have set the wireless router to favor someone
else's PC. Perhaps this stuff can happen when they are using it.

Anyways, it's weird. I'm glad it doesn't mess up ordinary keyboard
input.

And with 500 million accounts, they still cannot get their anti-spam
algorithms to work 1/10th as well as Gmail.

All of my Outlook.com(fka Hotmail) and Gmail accounts are about the
same...for the most not much ever is delivered to the Inbox, all
undesired usually ends up in the respective account's filtered location
- Junk, Spam respectively.

Gmail acct opened in 2007 is used strictly for two groups (Win7 and
Win8) - average last two weeks about 50-70 per day to Spam folder,
hardly anything get through to Inbox (less than a dozen per month)

My Outlook.com account on the other hand has been in use publicly much
longer (initially in 1995) until 2007 on Usenet, continued instant
messaging on 6 contintents, blog contact address 7 yrs until 2013 on a
public site with over 1.6 million visits, Skype, Twitter and Facebook.
- similar results to Gmail for the Hotmail Junk Folder, but nothing to
the Inbox.

A few years ago I would agree that Gmail's were better, today I don't
see a difference (and I've 11 Outlook.com accounts). Now, if I include
a Yahoo Plus account, no comparison, Yahoo is the worst by a long
shot..it misses more than all my other web based email accounts combined.

I have no trouble with spam in Hotmail. Occasionally, yeah, but
it's no problem.

How many are actually working?

Hotmail is so unreliable that there must be thousands, if not millions of
abandoned accounts.

Hotmail/Outlook accounts needs to be accessed periodically once every 60
days AFAIK. After 60 days, the accounts are suspended and after one
year the accounts are deleted and made available to other users.

Between 60 days and one year, you can resurrect your account but your
old emails are all deleted and gone forever. Effectively, you start afresh.

That's the problem with big numbers..Millions or tens of millions does
not have as much impact when it the user base is well over 100 millions.

Abandoned accounts disappear automatically after 1 yr of non-use first
deleting the data stored in the account (including OneDrive, Calendar,
Mail with subsequent account deletion freeing up the username for reuse.
- Some exceptions once deleted are no longer
available for reuse. Slightly different for deleted free/fee based msn
accounts, not available for use by the public, but available for reuse
only to fee based premium MSN accounts.

The volume of Hotmail type accounts (Outlook.com and Hotmail.com)
increased almost exponentially in the last few years. Of significance
is the lack of deprecation of Windows Live Messenger in China the
primary growth market. Pacific Basin, India, and Hispanic populations
follow even though Messenger is not directly available in those markets
long since replaced by MSFT accounts (new Hotmail, Outlook.com and
existing Live and Msn.com) with increasing Skype usage.

The world's actually a lot larger than one might expect. As
infrastructure improves as well as the inevitable o/s replacement (it
wont be long before Win7 is no longer available) using MSFT accounts
those abandoned even have less significance on the big picture.

That's not true at all. There is no 60 days to one year constraint.
There is a constraint if the new account is not used in the first month
after creation.

What topic ? You titled the thread as OT and reported the original
concern as 'gone'
