Default blue screen 0x00000024

Hi,
I turned on my HP laptop this morning and I received a message saying that
there was some issues with. the system was going to run a chdsk and fix it.
It deleted some file but could not do the following step due to insufficient
memory space. I turned off the computer and restarted it and I got the
message "A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to
prevent damage to your computer. I followed instruction by restarting the
system but I got the same message. It tells me to follow the steps "Disable
or uninstall any anti-virus...." but I can not do any of that since no
matter what key I hit (8, 11 or 12) or the option I choose (start windows
normal, start with last correct version), I always end up on the blue
screen.

Technical inforamtion
STOP : 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x8318E0C0, OXC0000102, 0X00000000)

For information: I have not installed any new softare or hardware lately.
The only thing which could have happened is the automatic update.

thanks
Nathalie

Jose has suggested one way forward.

What is the laptop make and model?

Do you have important data on the drive you need to recover?

Background information on Stop Error message
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms793935.aspx

0x00000024: NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM
A problem occurred within NTFS.SYS, the driver file that allows the
system to read and write to NTFS file system drives. There may be a
physical problem with the disk, or an Interrupt Request Packet (IRP) may
be corrupted. Other common causes include heavy hard drive
fragmentation, heavy file I/O, problems with some types of
drive-mirroring software, or some antivirus software. I suggest running
ChkDsk or ScanDisk as a first step; then disable all file system filters
such as virus scanners, firewall software, or backup utilities. Check
the file properties of NTFS.SYS to ensure it matches the current OS or
SP version. Update all disk, tape backup, CD-ROM, or removable device
drivers to the most current versions.

It is a HP Pavilion dv8000
I do have important data on the drive but I made a copy of the drives on an
external hard drive (the copy might already 2 to 3 weeks old though).
The problem though is that I don't have access to anything. I can't get away
from the blue screen to run anything.

Have you looked at the Manual?
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00701888.pdf

F10 is mentioned in the Manual -see Page 1 if Section 2.

Section 6B deals with System Recovery.

Otherwise you might read / copy the data on the drive from another
computer.

When you ran chkdsk /r from the Recovery Console, what were the
results?

If your chkdsk did not work before and you had to cut the power, that
would be the first thing to do.

I'd say, if you have the original boot cd for XP, then boot up with it,
and go into the Repair Console to run a chkdsk from there. But you said
it's an HP laptop, and I don't think HP or most computer manufacturers
supply full Windows system disks with their systems, just a small
reinstaller on a separate partition. You could conceivably borrow a full
XP install CD from a friend, or download it from somewhere. It doesn't
have to be identical to the version of XP that's on your hard disk
already, you just need it long enough to run the Repair console. You'll
need to know your Admin password on the laptop, of course.
