No problems yet. Is the Comcast free offering worth it? Why change a winning team? If you're happy with avast! (and the other software), stick with it. I've been using avast! for years. The latest version is a bit bloated, but you can choose to *not* install the unnecessary "tools". I've also disabled the Mail Shield since it's useless. The File System Shield should offer enough protection and my ISP already scans my mail for viruses. I only use the File System Shield in real time. I did use the Web Shield for awhile but it felt like it was slowing down my browsing. Besides, I run MBAM in real time and it does some web shielding. I also run their Software Updater occasionally and it seems to work well. The reason I was asking was similar to this situation. "I am driving an old Chevy and am happy with it. Now someone offers me a Corvette, hmmmm! Should I get it?" Thanks, -- Buffalo |

I am using McAfee because it came bundled with my laptop and I got 3 years extension for £20 so I took it. It is the best Anti Virus product I have ever used. I have decided never to use free versions ever again unless it is from Microsoft. Microsoft discontinued their free version for XP when they discontinued XP support. So I looked for a new antivirus thingy and someone recommended a comparishon site, whose location I now forget. I went there, and it reco0mmended Avira, which seems to work. Was it Virus Bulletin's site? https://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/latest_comparative/index AIUI, companies have to submit their products for testing, so they'd better have faith in it. :-) I never saw MS Security Essentials rate as high as I see people say it is. Even now the Microsoft entry is in the back of the pack. I don't think so. It was a site where you entered your systerm, the kind of things you used your computer for and your level of expertise and it made a recommendation. Steve and Good Guy, I'm not so sure you guys are right. Here's a quote from this Virus Bulletin page, https://www.virusbtn.com/vbspam/methodology/index "If you are interested in submitting your product for future test, please contact for more details." This doesn't sound like advertising or submitting system details and getting a recommendation to me. No, it wasn't that site that gave me the recommendation, I just can't remember which one it was. AV-Comparatives, maybe. Someone posted that site after I wrote the reply above. I'd forgotten about the site. I run Avast on my Win 7 laptop, but when Microsoft stopped supporting XP, I ditched their security essentials on my desktop computer and looked for another one. Someone told me about the site that would recomment, and I tried it and got Avira. I've got Avira Free on this Mac, and Avast Free on my Windows computer. I'm getting tired of the Avast nag screens, and with Avira outscoring Avast in the latest Virus Bulletin tests, I may switch if I get bored enough. Avast seemed to come up with a false positive the other day - a graphic on my blog, which has been there for several years, but suddenly caused Avast to bong and issue dire warnings. Avira seems to get stuck occasionally. -- Steve Hayes from Tshwane, South Africa Web: http://www.khanya.org.za/stevesig.htm Blog: http://khanya.wordpress.com E-mail - see web page, or parse: shayes at dunelm full stop org full stop uk |
