Deleted messages come back
Hi Robear,
I posted in the XP group because I thought it was an XP issue in addition to an OE issue. Otherwise I would not have posted to another group. Sorry. As to serious issues, my pc functions well in all other respects and as I stated, now I do not have any deleted items returning so far. What is the harm in bypassing the Deleted folder and the Recycle Bin? When I decide to delete something it's because I have no more use for it and will have no reason to retrieve it. I use AVG AntiVirus v8, AdAware Plus, Spybot S & D, Spyware Blaster, and Super AntiSpyware. I use the free version of Zone Alarm firewall. McAfee came with my computer 3 years ago but I uninstalled it and reformatted several times in the meantime anyway so there's nothing left. I did have Norton AntiVirus for a while but uninstalled it using Symantic's Removal tool and I use Revo Uninstaller regularly which doesn't show any sign of it in my system. Right now my computer is running like it just came from Dell. I've got my fingers crossed. Thanks for your efforts to help. I really appreciate it. Stan "PA Bear [MS MVP]" wrote in message ... Deleted messages come back
Hi,
I don't have the Tea Timer. I just very recently got Ad-Watch and I had the problem prior to Ad-Watch so that's not the culprit. As to the safety net in the Deleted folder and Recycle Bin, I only delete what I am positive I will never need. I'm very careful about that and if I ever slip up I'll live with it. So far all is well so I'll just see what happens from now on. Hopefully I won't have to bother you again. Stan "PA Bear [MS MVP]" wrote in message ... Deleted messages come back
Stan
Is it all deleted messages that come back or some? When you compact copies of all Outlook Express folders before complaction are placed in the Recycle Bin. It is possible to restore these to Outlook Express. It sounds unlikely that you would do this but please check that you are not doing this. When compacting is taking place do you get any messages asking whether you want to Allow or Not Allow some action to take place? Have you tried manually compacting Outlook Express before you are prompted to allow automatic compaction? Manual compaction gives you more control over the process and defers automatic compaction for another 100 openings of Outlook Express. In Outlook Express place the cursor on Local Folders and select File, Work Offline followed by File, Folder, Compact All. Do not attempt to interupt or stop the process until it has completed. Close Outlook Express when it has completed. After compacting check your Outlook Express folders are as they should be. Then select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Also select Start, All Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp, More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest System Restore point. Run Disk Defragmenter. Do you see any deleted messages returning other than those left by you in the Deleted Items folder at the time you compacted? -- Hope this helps. That makes no sense whatsoever, Gerry. Why use Shift+Delete when using
Delete (or CTRL+D) does not delete News messages to Deleted Items in the first place? Think about it... Gerry wrote: Oh there speaks the confidence of youth G. Deleted messages come back
Checked what you said. CTRL+D puts a mail message in the Deleted Items folder. CTRL+D permanently deletes newsgroup messages. Conclusion -might as well use Shift + Delete for unwanted messages rather have to think which type of message is being deleted. Deleted messages come back
Gerry,
"Gerry" wrote in message ... Stan Is it all deleted messages that come back or some? Just some When you compact copies of all Outlook Express folders before complaction are placed in the Recycle Bin. It is possible to restore these to Outlook Express. It sounds unlikely that you would do this but please check that you are not doing this. No I don't do this When compacting is taking place do you get any messages asking whether you want to Allow or Not Allow some action to take place? No Have you tried manually compacting Outlook Express before you are prompted to allow automatic compaction? Manual compaction gives you more control over the process and defers automatic compaction for another 100 openings of Outlook Express. Yes Do you see any deleted messages returning other than those left by you in the Deleted Items folder at the time you compacted? This does not always happen so I really don't know what comes back but it is a lot. As I reported, now that I followed Robear's suggestions and delete with bypassing the Deleted Folder and the Recycle Bin I am no longer getting back any deleted items. Thanks for your efforts. For the latter, post to microsoft.public.windowsxp.general newsgroup.] ...What is the harm in bypassing the Deleted folder and the Recycle Bin? You might delete something in error. Better to have the deleted items in Deleted folder or Recycle Bin and not need them than the other way around! (I just replied to a user in another newsgroup who Shift+Deleted a file and now he needs it for work!) Also, you might be tempted to ignore what's already in Deleted folder and Recycle Bin: Why clog your machine with unneeded files? I use AVG AntiVirus v8, AdAware Plus, Spybot S & D, Spyware Blaster, and Super AntiSpyware. I use the free version of Zone Alarm firewall. What is the harm in bypassing the Deleted folder and the Recycle Bin? When I decide to delete something it's because I have no more use for it and will have no reason to retrieve it. Move any messages that you want to keep out of Sent Items and Deleted Items folders and into other local OE folders you've created for archiving (saving) such messages. 1b. Move 99% of your messages in your Inbox folder to other local OE folders, too. 2. Write down the location of your identity's store (http://www.insideoe.com/files/store.htm#storemain). 3. Close OE. 4. In Windows Explorer, navigate to your store folder, find & delete the files Outbox.dbx, Sent Items.dbx, and Deleted Items.dbx. To avoid such problems in the futu - Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local folders created for this purpose. - Empty Deleted Items folder daily. - Disable Background Compacting [not available in SP2] and frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". Sorry for the confusion. Did not mean that you suggested bypassing but that
in addition to following your suggestions about compacting etc I ALSO, at my own peril, decided to bypass and all is well now. Don't know if the bypassing is in any way responsible or not but again, all is well. Sorry I was not more explicit. Stan "PA Bear [MS MVP]" wrote in message ...
