Default NTLDR is compressed

NTLDR is compressed. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart.
This is the message I get when I start my computer (XP Home Edition). When I
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del it restarts and I get the same message.XP was already
installed when I got the computer so I don't have an XP CD.I tried using an
XP boot disk (floppy) and got this message:"Windows could not start because
the following file is missing or corrupt:windows root\system 32\hal.dll
Please re-install a copy of the above file",then I took the floppy
out, restarted and am back at the "NTLDR is compressed"I am just a beginner
really,to all this stuffAny help, ideas or suggestions would be much
appreciated. If at all possible, I would like to keep the files and photos
etc. that I've got somewhere on my computer, from when it used to
work.Thank-you in advance for any advice about this

There is any MSDN article that discusses this. See:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pro...d_tro_evwd.asp

Your predicament will be that most of the fixes in the article discuss
using the recovery console to repair either the MBR or the boot sector of
the drive. The Recovery Console is accessed by booting from the XP CD and
choosing the first repair option. Still worth a read though, make sure
you see the two sub-sections in the left tree about restoring the mbr and
replacing the boot sector.

Hi Chris,

In addition to Tom's response, check your HP documentation on how to =
load the Recovery Console as you do not have the CD. You will need this =
for some of the repair operations discussed in that article, or to do =
the repair install.

Rick, are you psychic? =) How do you know that Chris owns an HP? Did I
miss something?

A guess Tom, a guess.....I just got my crystal ball back from the shop, =
so I'm giving it a test run.

Truth is - I was thinking HP as Chris mentioned "already =
installed......I don't have an XP CD", so that's what I wrote. I meant =
to simply state "system documentation". Spellcheck doesn't seem to catch =
those errors.
