Firewall

Hello all,
I have a dial-up connection to the web. Can anyone tell
me if it is true that with dial-up, there is no need for
a firewall? My ISP tells me that because I get a new IP
address each time I dial up, that because of that I dont
need to have a firewall. Anyone know if the is true?

Hi Dave,

Being on dial-up means that a hacker is less likely to target your =
machine - it does not mean they will not. Your ISP is correct in that =
each time you sign on, you get a different IP, this means that a hacker =
would have a harder time finding you specifically again, so loading a =
remote module to your machine is not likely for this reason plus your =
connection is too slow if they are the type to launch remote attacks. =
However, one could still monkey with you. Plus, if they load a trojan to =
your machine it can connect "home" and thus make it easy for the hacker =
to locate you. But like I said, any serious hacker is not going to =
bother with a user on a slow connection.

www.zonealarm.com (be aware that ZA has had some reported problems with =
XP users)

And of course, there is the firewall native to WinXP itself - it does a =
fair job as far as software firewalls go. It just doesn't block outgoing =
traffic.
