Shared folder Asks for password only from one Computer, others connect OK
I had 2 computers on my home network: a laptop with WinXP (SP2) Home and Desktop1 with WinXP Pro (SP2). I connect to the Internet through a D-LInk router. Both computers run Comodo Internet Security software. I successfully set up home network between the two computers (workgroup is called HOME). Both computers had shared folders set up and I was able to add a network drive to a file manager. Now here's the problem: I have bought a new desktop computer Desktop2. It has WinXP Pro (SP2) with Comodo internet security. Now I did not need Desktop1 and just disconnected it from the network and did not use it for some time. I successfully set up networking and folder sharing between the Laptop and Desktop2. Today I needed a third computer and I connected the old Desktop1 to the network and booted it up. Then I wanted to add a shared folder on Desktop2 as a mapped network drive to a file manager on Destop1 and for some reason, when I type \\Desktop1\Sharename in the Run command dialog, I get a login dialog with the Desktop1\GUEST in the user name field (this field is also greyed out and cannot be changed) and is asking to enter a password (I get the same prompt to enter GUEST password if I browse for Desktop2 and try to open it in My Network Places). Naturally, the GUEST account does not have a password. What's weird though, is that I can connect from Desktop2 (the new computer) to the old Desktop1 and can see the shared folder just fine. Only Desktop 1 is asking to enter a password for the Gest account when connecting to Desktop2. However, Desktop2 connects to Laptop just fine and Laptop connects to both Desktop1 and Desktop2 just fine and does not ask for any password. So the only problem is the connection from Desktop1 to Desktop2. I have checked network Guest account using *net user guest*, and the account is active on all computers. Adding an update... I have reverted the windows installation on Desktop1 to the backed up version (the back up was made right after installing the system and with a minimal configuration) Now both Desktop1 and Desktop2 ask for the Guest password, but connection to the laptop from both destop1 and desktiop2 works fine (laptop has Windows home) I have tried the following with no success: * "Permitting Network Access Without a Password To allow users to log onto their computers without a password and then access the XP Professional machine without a password, you must make a security policy change: _x0000_i1035 Go to Control Panel | Performance and Maintenance | Administrative Tools | Local Security Policy. Expand Local Policies | Security Options. Double-click Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console login only, which is enabled by default. Disable this option and click OK. " * I have tried unchecking Simple File Sharing in the Folder options/View tab and setting up two identical accounts with passwords on both desktops. Start Control Panel Administrative Tools Local Security Policy In the window [Local Security Settings], go to: Security Settings Local Policies Security Options Select the [Network access: sharing model and security for local accounts] Right-click Properties And choose the value [Classic - local users authenticate themselves] Note: This trick works only for XP and Vista Pro. Disable Simple File Sharing (Folder OptionsView tab scroll and clear checkbox beside "Use simple file sharing (Recommended)"). In Administrative Tools, Local Security Policy, scroll to find ""Network access: Sharing and security model for local accounts" and ensure that it's set for "Classic - local users authenticate themselves". I also set permissions on the shared folder for EVERYONE to full control This time the login dialog still appeared, but the user filed was not grayed out. When I entered the newly created user name and password, the dialog just came back. So this approach did not solve the problem. This is probably not the shared folder permissions problem because when I enter just the computer name in the Run dialog like this \\Desktop1 (or Desktop2) I still get the login dialog. This does not happen when I run the same command from the laptop with the Home edition of windows xp. When I run the command \\Desktop1 from the laptop, I get a windows explorer window where all the shared folder on \\Desktop1 are listed and then I can open those folders. The problem is two desktop computers running WinXP Pro require password to log in. I would appreciate any help with resolving this issue. Dave |
