The Folder Attribute is marked 'Read Only' I unset this and click 'apply' and click OK. I then check the Prperties again and the Attribute has reverted to 'Read Only' I don't know how to overcome this.

I will make a new Folder and copy the files into it and see how I go on, I will report back.

Thanks once again,

John(Whinney17)
Sorry for the delay in responding, but I have been away.
Have done further checks and I seem to have identified the problem to one folder of images which is a sub-folder in a 'Tree' of numerous other folders. I don't want to delete this folder unless there is no other option, as there are photos on it I wish to keep. However when I use Explorer to display the files, with a view to copying them to another folder, within a few seconds, Explorer crashes.
Is there any way I can check the folder before having to delete it?

Further help/advice will be very much appreciated.

Just one bad sub-folder raises the possibility of a bad spot on the HD,
so I suggest running XP's disk checker. If you don't remember how:
Bring up Explorer, then RtClick on the disk (usually C:\), then click on
Properties, then on the Tools tab, then on ErrorChecking, then click on
both options, then on the Start button; then Restart your PC which will
kick off CheckDisk. When your PC reboots, try running Explorer again to
see if the problem has been fixed.

Before using CheckDisk, I'd update and run every antivirus and
antispyware and antimalware app you have, to see if any app other than
Explorer has a problem accessing that one sub-folder. And, I'd fire up
cmd.exe, point it at that sub-folder and do a DIR. Also, I'd reboot into
safe mode to see if Explorer can access that sub-folder from there.

Thanks Bob for your suggestions, which I have tried, results as follows:-
In Safe Mode No difference, Check Disk shows nothing amiss, Malwarebytes, SpyBot, Windows Defender and AVG all report no problems.
However I copied the offending Folder/s to a Pen Drive and find that from this everything works fine, Photos load and nothing crashes. The folder Tree on my Computer is NEWS/Images and NEWS/2012_photos, if I click on Images or 2012_photos Windows Explorer crashes and the same thing happens, if I try to do the same thing using Photoshop 7 or Paint Shop Pro. However, if I repeat this exercise using the Pen Drive everything works OK.
So, I deleted the folder NEWS from my 'C' drive then loaded a copy from the Pen drive onto my 'C' Drive and I am back to square one, crashing each time I try to open either Images or 2012_photos.
I then deleted the folder Images from the NEWS folder to see if that would make a difference, then I tried opening 2012_photos in Windows Explorer, the folder's files were displayed and then an error message was displayed saying "A serious fault has occured in the Turnpike Program (my mail client which was open and working in the background)) and quoted the following:-
C:\Windows\sytem32\ntdll.dll 0001:0003629b
I don't know whether any of this is relevant apart from it making the whole problem more complicated than ever.
If you have any more thoughts, I would againg be most grateful.
