What is Windows 10 Fall Creators Update? Everything you need to knowabout Microsoft's big upgrade
Rolling out from the 17th October, the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update
promises to deliver new features big and small to Windows desktops. By Nick Heath | October 11, 2017, 9:10 AM PST http://www.techrepublic.com/article/...ts-big-upgrade The fourth major update to Windows 10 is almost here, promising to deliver new features big and small to Windows desktops. Rolling out from the 17th October, the headline features in the free Fall Creators Update are changes to how Windows 10 handles cloud storage, easier sharing with friends and family, better security, longer battery life and a more-intuitive design for the OS and its apps. As with previous updates, however, don't expect massive leaps forward, more general tinkering around the edges. -- David B. |

As with previous updates, however, don't expect massive leaps forward, I don't fault you, but I didn't see anything concrete in that listing worth even the bother of the backup before the update, let alone the update. Changes to "x" and better "y" is essentially meaningless, for example. |

By Nick Heath | October 11, 2017, 9:10 AM PST I have to wonder what fresh new hell this is going to be. I recently had to do a fresh install of Windows 10 on a Dell PC due to hard drive failure. (Factory SSD went belly up just out of warranty.) So I used the Media Creation Tool to get make a current installation thumb drive. When Cortana started blabbing at me from the damned computer and wanting to learn my voice (which I do not recall it doing with earlier Windows 10 installations) I wanted to thrown the whole mess down the stairs. Get out of my face, Cortana. WTF, I just need to install the damned operating system and don't need or want all the extraneous crap and fluff. The amount of crap you have to turn off to make Windows 10 palatable in a business environment just keeps getting worse with each "exciting new update." There's an icon you can click in that section of the installer, to stop the blabbing. I wasn't able to find a picture. It might look like a microphone icon. On my first install, I let it blabber away. On my second install, I managed to turn it off. And that was much better. Paul |

Thanks for that tip as I had manually turned off all the Cortana buttons in Windows 10 Pro myself (which seemed to work) but if clicking this one button in Winaero Tweaker does the same thing, that's a neat trick. WinAero: Windows Apps Disable Cortana [x]Disable Cortana http://wetakepic.com/images/2017/10/14/disable_cortana2.jpg Not surprisingly, it requires a reboot, but it allows you to do it later. http://wetakepic.com/images/2017/10/14/disable_cortana.jpg The amount of crap you have to turn off to make Windows 10 palatable in a business environment just keeps getting worse with each "exciting new update." At least with the Pro version, you can turn the bitch off. Wonder when MS will screw up Pro ? KenW With all of the fancy additions to Windows 10 there are some that I have never openned ie 3D paint. I have absolutely no need for any of them. -- 2017: The year we learn to play the great game of Euchre |

I'm still ticked off though at having to waste my time dealing with this garbage which should not be there in the first place, at least not in the "Pro" version used by businesses. Of course that doesn't stop Cortana from mouthing off during initial setup, particularly on a laptop or all-in-one with built-in speakers. (I know you can turn it off with a click but I'd rather not hear her spouting off to begin with even for a few seconds.) I also need to check if there are group policy settings to disable all the stuff in Privacy settings system-wide. Through the built-in GUI many of the settings are per-user and it becomes a PITA on PCs with multiple users to keep it all turned off that way. Really the Win10 Pro version should come with all this crap disabled by default. I can't think of a single good reason for burdening businesses and system administrators with any of it. (Maybe it just takes a few minutes to go in and disable the most egregious garbage, but it's a moving target you need to keep on top of. Multiply that by millions of Win10 PCs being deployed and how much total time is being wasted on this stuff?) -- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Roger Blake (Posts from Google Groups killfiled due to excess spam.) I'm just asking if this tweak above and the Winaero tweak accomplish the same result or not. |
