Microsoft's real lock-in is the applications that run on Windows, particularly Office. Applications from 3rd parties also insure that Windows remains the top choice. If you need an off-the-shelf business application chances are you will need to run Windows. (Most users don't care about the operating system, many are even unaware of the concept. They just know that they are using "Microsoft.") Even moving to a Mac means swimming against the current. Unless a replacement is 100% bug-for-bug compatible, Windows will be with us for a long time to come. That's the case for desktop systems. On the server end of course it is a different story. -- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Roger Blake (Posts from Google Groups killfiled due to excess spam.) Google's Chrome OS is based on Linux. So why do you think that you have to wait to move to a Linux-based OS? You can do that today. Unless Microsoft amends many of its rude behaviors in Windows 10, Linux will be where I go on my next computer build. Doesn't matter if Microsoft extends their free offer for another year or indefinitely. Free or paid is not the issue for adoption (for me). ... or one from the Chinese. And then, it will be "Sayonara Windows". Cute. Likely that would just be another Linux kernel variant and you can switch to Linux today. No waiting required. Despite your public lamentations here, I strongly suspect you will continue using Windows (either what you have now or you will move to Win10). Hell, you're still using Microsoft's defective WLM product to post here. Those that make vacuous threats here never carry through. |

There's another thread, where he presented a script of KBs to remove, done some time ago. So this wasn't as if someone parachuted in to drop one message and leave. In message , Wolf K
writes As soon as desktop linux comes together to create a "BRAND", the world will follow. Too late for that. Android has done it, but it runs on smartphones and tablets, not desktops. NB that only techie nerds know (or care) that it's a Linux. More smartphones run on it than on iOS. But Android, at least up to the 4.4 that I've reached, is a real mess on the mobiles I've tried. It works, but the interface is erratic between versions and nowhere near as solid feeling as the competitors. It's not too bad on a phablet, but who wants to hold a great lump like that to their ear as a phone. The desktop will survive as a workstation, but for most people, the computing device of choice will be whatever evolves as smartphone and tablet converge. Both are already implicated in all kinds of neat gadgets, eg, I saw an electronic lock that's configured automatically with a smartphone, total installation time about 15-20 minutes. It will unlock if it senses the smartphone "nearby". Or not, depending. It can be configured to give selected people, such as dog-walkers, access to the house at programmed times via their smartphones. Etc. You can't do that with a desktop.... I've been trying a Windows 8.1 Phone and have been very surprised how good it is. In contrast, my W8.1 tablet running the full wimboot version of the OS has to be the most annoying computing device that I've used in years. I'm hoping to try a Blackberry phone soon, as I find the Playbook interface really good. Microsoft's huge mistake has been to try to converge Phone and PC. Anyone know if you can run proper programs, as opposed to apps on a W8.1 Phone? -- Bill |
