Icons act funny.

I have Internet-shortcut icons on the desktop
with their distinctive logos which all work
well.

But when I create a new folder on the desktop
and transfer these icons into it (for
grouping) the logo disappears only to be
replaced by the standard IE7 logo.

When I transfer the icons back on to the
desktop from the folder all the original
logos reappear immediately.


I want the distinctive logos to remain.
Please help.

The custom icons for websites are temporary and will disappear when the
custom icon file is automatically deleted from the Temporary Internet Files
folder or when the shortcut is moved to a different location on the hard
drive.

To make these shortcut icons permanent, you need to locate the icon in the
TIF and copy it to another, permanent folder on the hard drive. You can then
open the properties for the shortcut and use the Change Icon feature to
associate that icon with the shortcut.

To do this manually:
1. Open Windows Explorer and create a new folder called Custom Icons. Click
Tools/Folder Options/View Tab. Select these two options: "Display the
contents of system folders" and "Show hidden files and folders".

2. Open C:\Documents and Settings\user name\Local Settings\Temporary
Internet Files. On the Toolbar, select Search/All files and folders. Type,
favico for the search term and click Search.

3. The search results will show all of the Favico (Favorite Icons) files. In
the search window, select View/Thumbnails from the menu bar. This will
reveal the images for the favico files.

4. Use drag and drop to copy the icon file you want to save to the folder
you created in step 1. Rename each file with an intuitive name as you copy
them to the new icons folder.

5. You can now right click a desktop shortcut and select Properties/Change
Icon Button. Click the Browse button to navigate to the new icon folder and
select the custom icon you wish to associate with that shortcut. This will
make that icon permanent for that shortcut.

Not sure that applies. If you move the icon (faviconed shortcut) to a folder
it disappears, if you move it back to the desktop it reappears. I'd never
noticed it before..kinda strange you'd think if it got pushed out then it
wouldn't appear if you slapped it back on the desktop.

never noticed this behavior prior to you mentioning it...so I tried it out

I can't re-create the behavior you are describing here? I move an internet shortcut from the Desktop to a sub-folder that resides on the desktop and the favicon still appears on the shortcut?

How are these shortcuts being created? Are you creating the shortcuts from the desktop and adding the website URL, or creating them from the actual website? (Right click the website page and select "Create Shortcut"?) Does the webpage that the shortcut points to exist in the Internet Explorer Favorites (Bookmark) folder?

Regardless, anytime you are dealing with a file that exists in the internet cache (Temporary Internet Files) you may see strange, unexpected behavior. This is simply due to the way the TIF folder is designed.

The only way to make sure that these shortcuts behave, as any other shortcut behaves, is to follow the previous instructions in this thread and make the Favico icons permanent by copying them to a different, permanent folder and pointing the shortcut to that icon file.

I fixed this on my system by ensuring the
folder view was set to "Icons" (and NOT to
"Thumbnails").

But still the temporary "favicons" have to
made permanent by copying to another folder
and renaming them. Use the "change icon"
button to select them permanently.
