Default Window messenger installed with SP2

Looks like Windows Messenger is installed with SP2 update without giving you
a way to uninstall it. I previously installed MSN messenger on my system and
uninstalled Windows messenger via the Add/Remove Windows Components tool so I
wouldn't have conflicts. That setup worked fine untill the SP2 update.

SP2 installed Windows Messenger 4.7.3000 and appears to have changed the way
Messenger (Windows and MSN versions) works with different programs. Here are
some of my observations:

1. MSN messenger still appears to be the default when I boot XP. That's
good.
2. Windows messenger can also be configured to launch at boot. That's bad.
3. CAN uninstall MSN messenger after SP2 update. That's good.
4. CAN'T uninstall Windows Messenger after SP2 update. That's bad.
5. MSN messenger still works correctly. That's good.
6. Windows messenger still works correctly. That's bad.
7. Clicking on Messenger button in IE actually launches Windows messenger.
At least is works. That's good.
8. Clicking on Messenger button in IE launches Windows messenger even if
MSN messenger is currently running. That's bad.

Obviously, there are some kinks in the SP2 update that will have to be
worked out for MSN messenger users. I guess having Windows messenger is not
a bad thing since it allows you to use Remote assistance (so I've heard) but
being able to uninstall it after SP2 update would be nice. I can always
remove the Messenger button from my IE toolbar but being able to decide which
messenger it activates by default would be nice (so would tabbed browsing but
that's another post).

Any advice or recommendations welcome.

Have you tried setting your default instant messaging
program in Set Program Access and Defaults? It's
available on the Start menu (if using the XP menu style),
or at the top of the All Programs menu, or in Add/Remove
Programs. If you set MSN Messenger as the default, that
should cause IE to invoke it by default.

Mike,

Good idea. However, Windows messenger is the only choice for Instant
Messenging Program. MSN messenger isn't even suggested in the Enable access
item. I'll try reinstalling MSN messenger and see if it gives me that option.

Hi,

MSN Messenger does not add itself to this list.
