Default shutdown problem after installing sp2 for xp home

installed sp2 yesterday and now when i go to "start"--"turn off computer",
there is a 10-15 second delay before i get the option to choose "turn off."
after i click turn off, i get two messages about applications not
responding--explorer.exe and connections tray. i either click "end now" for
those, or it disappears itself, then goes to saving settings, etc.

when it gets to last screen ("windows is shutting down"), the screen just
hangs forever. i have to hold down my power button to turn off the computer.
using "restart" still works, but is slow.

i tired everything in safe mode and had no problems, so i realize something
is causing the problem, but i have no idea how to fix. any suggestions are
appreciated. thanks
