Default Sound recorder/ microphone too quiet

Hello people, I am having trouble with my microphone. When i try to record
through it using Sound Recorder the wave graphic depicting sound input
dosn't move at all and I can hear myself very very faintly on the playback.
If I go into volume control the mic is selected and the levels are all set
at full. How can I increase the volume of the mic any further. The sound
card is a C-Media one.
