Mouse Side Button
Win XP Pro with standard install for mouse I think.
I got a new mouse with the express desire to have a side button that I can use to magnify a portion of the screen. I have this on another PC with a MS mouse/keyboard by installing the bloated MS keyboard / mouse code. Can I simply get the side button working with a free magnifier without all the MS bloat? It is a MS Mobile Mouse 4000 that I need a hand held magnifier to read the damn label. Cheeeeese. Yes, I like small meeces. This one even has a power switch that I can easily flip and a beautiful blue LED (lol). P.S. i think it also has a center wheel press and tilt left / right action too. would be nice to use those too. |

I don't know if there is a magic way to do it. There is supposed to be a service called "hidserv" that helps with additional buttons, but a check of the system hidserv.inf file shows it is mainly for multimedia keyboards (some of which are named in the file). An article I was reading suggested that mice use it, but I don't know if I believe that or not. Maybe there's some other thing that is needed, to get mice into the act. In terms of "bloat", I would have to classify the items: 1) Adding 200MB of files to C:, not a big deal. 2) Adding lots of cruft to Registry, not a big deal. 3) Leaving services running that don't belong there = "hammer time". 4) Leaving services running, like maybe a "hidserv", OK, as long as it isn't for a product I don't have. 5) Decorating every folder with shortcuts I'll never need, well, this is annoying. So if I were to install some 200MB package to run the one mouse button, I would be on the lookout for unnecessary startup items (checking for updates), or services that have nothing to do with what I'm using the computer for. For example, my Logitech camera software could add goofy cartoon faces to Skype, which obviously brought out the "hammer time" reaction in my. In some cases, when I get software, I just go to the driver folder, find the .inf file that controls driver installation, tight click and "install". but that seldom does a complete job. It might work for a NIC card ndis driver. But some other things need "helper" work from some .exe, and so a .inf install would not be complete enough. In your case, something mouclass or hidserv in the bloated package, might resolve driver dependencies, but if the OS lacks a way of binding button 4 and button 5 to the Magnifier, then you really need their "bloat application" to drive the thing. So you're forced to use the whole package, if you cannot figure out what component parts can be safely and effectively installed separately. Paul |

Paul Go to MS for Mouse 4000 and there are now only drivers for Win 7 up. MS has further gone down the tubes in my book and will get no more business from me. Anybody know where to get the Win XP drivers? --- news://freenews.netfront.net/ - complaints: --- |

Are you sure it isn't on the CD that came with the mouse ? I can try going back in time here. But the menu doesn't work. https://web.archive.org/web/20110425...ile-mouse-4000 In my browser, if I do "View page source", I can find this in the source of the previous link. And this link still works on the real Microsoft site. This is Intellipoint 8. http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...8.01.249.0.exe I'd need a Microsoft mouse to really test that, so there's no point in my attempting to install it or anything. You'll have to tell me whether what I found is crap or gold :-) Paul |

I matched it up and installed it. v 6.31.258.0 Mouse Properties shows the Wireless Mobile Mouse 4000 and its picture and settings for all buttons and wheel. wheel button default is set to Instant View. what is that it seems to do nothing. The mouse also has a wheel tilt but there are not settings. horz scrolling is set to mid range. i'll fiddle with that later. It shows the mouse with all the buttons BUT ... Although I can select magnify for the left side button, it simple does not work. yes I booted several times. for now i have downladed a 3rd party magnifier that seems to work ok. not perfect but what the heck it does the job. i will try to write the code to make one i like but that is for later. |

You probably know this but you can magnify the whole page by holding down the Control key and tapping the + plus key. Using the - minus key makes it smaller. Buffalo |
