Marketing wise, it is a whole new version, as you have accurately and eloquently pointed out. The anti-customer tag comes from making it so hard to upgrade. Note providing media, U1 messing up computers, having to go to their accursed "Store" to download it, all the "Frankenstein (F)" features that went over like a rotting fish with their customer base, etc.. I wonder what they will do with U2. Please tell me you think they won't require U1 first before installing U2. What is up with this "U" crap anyway. Just called it "Service Pack [fill number in here]" Hope they do a better job with F8 to W9, like they did with Vista (we are going to die!) to W7. -T U = Update ...and shorter than spelling it out. There have been occurrences in MSFT past o/s where an update was not a Service Pack. We've had Rollup in 98, XP and in Vista. I disliked ME (lasted less than two days before reverted back to 98) more than Vista. Vista, for me worked fine except it was just too slow handling file management in Windows Explorer and across a network. Vista, which I've often referenced (here and even among MSFT personnel) as MSFT's Black Sheep runs to both ends of the table (some hated, some loved it). If pattern follows, 8.1U would be deprecated in favor of the next 8.1 'Update'. And its conceivable that 8.1 RTM would be the base requirement to obtain the second 8.1 update [U2] with the latter including 8.1U's KB 2919355. Likewise, whatever is the latest version then media (retail and system builder) in full version would replace retail sales of prior versions. If 9 arrives, it could easily require 8.1Ux as the minimum for retaining application programs, user files and settings) with clean installs required for Win8.0 and Win7. I've noted this before...MSFT is on a path to only support the current and prior. Today that means Windows 8.1U and Win7 (since XP is done, Vista soon, and 8.0 ending in 2015) -- ...winston msft mvp consumer apps |

In cases where the manufacturer does not successfully create a shorthand, we improvise. But we don't need to include derogatory things like "M$". This is a newsgroup about Windows 8. The Microsoft part of that, is implied. When we talk about some issue we're having, we need to identify the service pack level, update level, or perhaps even a specific security update (like a blackhole update). So when I use Win8.1 U1, that's an attempt to unambiguously identify the product, using no superfluous descriptor. The purpose of putting the "Win" on the front, is to make it easier to find (as search engines do not work well on diets of pure numbers). It's used in the same vein as WinXP was, a shorthand for Windows XP. Putting an "F" on the front, could confuse it with a French version of Windows 8. Paul |
