USB 2 PCI Card

This is outside the world of XP but I can find only one other NG I think
might be appropriate. I posted the question there but have yet to
receive an answer. Please forgive if I stray too far afield.

My MB (BIOSTAR) has two USB 1 connections on the rear plus a header to
which I have connected two front USB connections in one of the 5 1/4'
bays. That, of course, is USB 1 also. I put a USB 2 PCI Card in and
now
the header doesn't feed the front ports and there is no header on the
card.

Does anyone know of a USB 2 PCI card that has a header on it to which I
can
connect the two front ports? I don't seem to be able to find one via
Google or by local shopping.

There are many such USB 2,0 (and combo USB 2.0+Firewire)
cards available. Many have internal ports that use either
headers or a standard USB plug.

To get your USB 1.1 to work after you have installed the PCI
USB 2.0 card, use the device manager to remove ALL ports,
hubs and controllers and then reboot (or use add hardware)
so that the correct drivers are installed. The new card
should work and the USB 2.0 drivers will also install and
run the USB 1.1 hardware at 1.1 speed.

Companies such as Belkin, Orange, Adaptec and others make
such cards. Suppliers such as New Egg and CyberGuys have
nice catalogs.

Look for 5 port cards and read the specs, usually three
ports are on the rear and two are internal.

Google for "usb 2.0 pci card+5 ports"

OK, Jim,

I've got the USB 2 card working in harmony with the USB 1 built in.

However, I am left with the problem of getting the USB 2 out to the
front panel because the card has the normal USB connector and the cable
for the drive slot connector on the front panel has a header connector.

Guess I could always buy a new 3 1/2' drive hub. In fact, it would
probably be cheaper!

There are several options, one is to run a cable from the
rear back inside and connect it to one of the front ports.
You could leave one of the USB 1.1 ports connected and have
the other set at USB 2.0.

Or you can continue your search for a 5 or 6 port USB 2.0
card that has two internal ports. You still might need to
replace the USB header wires with different cables. Take a
look at www.cyberguys.com They have a number of USB card and
front panel devices, some include flash card readers.

You are so right!

I've had the same PC for about 20 years. It has had 6 new MB's, many
new HD's floppys and CD Roms, Monitors, Mice, cases, etc. but it is
still the same faithful machine.
