Kid can't delete a file that Steam won't let him
I don't understand why, but the neighbor's kid asked me to take a look
where he is on Windows 10 Home as the only user, and with administrative rights, where we can't delete a file that is related to a steam game. I used attrib as administrator and still couldn't delete the file, getting a permission denied. How can that be? |

You might try to download "take ownership" and from the right click context menu "take ownership" and then try Delete. HTH Rene |

If it can be deleted in the Safe Mode then I'd suspect some part of the game software was running in the background keeping the file marked as open or in use. |

You probably know this, but... You should not delete files that are within the Steam program folders if Steam does not allow it. You can try uninstalling Steam. |

There is a utility that removes files during a reboot. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sys...oads/pendmoves movefile test.exe "" It's the same subsystem the OS uses, the one that has the spinning circle at shutdown and startup. I haven't tested that on any really tough problems. Paul |

Maybe that would save on the reboots needed to find out how it really works. I didn't spent a whole evening testing that thing. I think I gave it one "easy" file to delete and that was it. The thrill wore off. Paul |

I haven't tested that on any really tough problems. I have another mysterious undeletable file with two periods following the name and no extension... delme.. When trying to delete or move it, when does throws a message about not being able to find it. There is a problem to do with the symbolic link. I brought up the issue before, and you commented. The solution was to use 7zip to zip the file and choose the option like "delete source files after zipping". It worked. BUT this time there is no 7zip option in the right-click context menu. So I tried your Sysinternals utility, mentioned above. The file is still there after a reboot even though the utility said it was slated for deletion. The problem is no big deal to me at the moment, but apparently the answer to your question is "No, it does not work on really tough problems." I can try adding a hard drive and copying everything but that file. Then format the drive and copy back... Yeah, some workaround. |

I wrote:
when does throws a message That should have been "Windows throws a message" And the filename "delme" is the name I gave it at one time, the name is not mysterious. Although it could conceivably have to do with the problem. I need to look for the prior discussion. |

Nevermind. Right clicking on the parent folder included the 7zip
option, and checking "delete files after zip process" (or whatever) removed the file. That was done after copying all but the problem file out of the folder. Not sure how that file appeared (again), maybe it has to do with me using the word "delme" as a filename. |
