Default Getting rid of Chrome and Cortina. Where is notepad?

How is Cortina removed from the taskbar? Nothing I found Googling worked.
It doesn show up anywhere I can delete it or uninstall it.

Also, how is Google Chrome removed from W-10 since it doesn't show up in
Control Panel/remove programs? It doesn't show up under apps or programs
either. Agent Ransack gives it's location but is not there when I go to
Windows-Explorer. This Chrome reminds me of a nasty virus the way it keeps
out of sight. It had to have been installed with something I downloaded.

Also, where is Notepad? Has that been removed from W-10?

I don't understand why there is so much bad info online when seeking help
with these things. I get better advice here.

TIA

Cortana is an App.

There are a few Apps which have a status of Not Removable.
That's to make it more of a challenge for persons like yourself :-)
Microsoft wants to show you who is the boss.

https://www.askvg.com/guide-how-to-r...in-windows-10/

"You can [use] Get-AppxPackage and Remove-AppxPackage
commands to uninstall/remove built-in apps in Windows 10."

Hahaha. Yes. Yes you can. With exceptions. That's why there is
a second link on that page, for specialty items. Cleverly, the
Apps seem to be stored in (at least) two places.

https://www.askvg.com/windows-10-tip...feedback-apps/

"C:\Program Files\WindowsApps
C:\Windows\SystemApps === the "hard" ones
"

And the individual there, uses my favorite technique,
which is to rename (not delete!) something so that the
system cannot find it. You rename stuff, so you can
undo your changes later. If the system cannot find
an executable, well, it's dead in the water. Just
be aware there could be side effects (disable Cortana,
lose search in an Explorer folder upper right hand corner???).

As users, we will be out of luck, if Microsoft
chooses to build "self-repair" as a feature into Windows10.
The thing is, they have *all* the subsystems to do it.
They just need a manager to say "make it so".
If they make such a feature, it will be like
a liquid metal robot from the future. Unstoppable.
The renaming tricks will then be... useless.

But until that day arrives, knock yourself out :-)
While you can use "official" controls for some
of them (Remove-AppxPackage or
Programs and Features/Windows Features)
so things just call out for renaming.

You can even rename a copy of cmd.exe and use
it to hack Windows 10 and get in without a password.
Renaming is wonderful fun.

*******

If you had Windows 10 Pro, you could look in GPEdit for a "policy".
And a "policy" has an equivalent set of registry settings (if you can
figure out what is getting set). In some cases, there are actually
useful GPEdit policies you can use. But those policies are not
designed with users in mind as such. It's not like the evil geniuses
at MS, package up all the evil as a simple set of buttons you
can press in GPEdit to get rid of stuff. GPEdit is to make
the life of the IT Department easier. If Cortana is in there,
it's probably in the Enterprise version of the OS.

*******

Notepad ?

That depends on the SKU you bought. If you have Windows 10-S
on the Surface products, and haven't upgraded to Win10 Pro,
then I could see notepad.exe (a win32 program) not being
able to run. If you're using a conventional SKU, it should
be in the folder it's always been in.

Type "notepad" into the Cortana search hole, and see what
happens. Or, right-click Start and type "notepad" into the
Run box. Frequently used items can be "promoted" into the
menu itself - and that can be disabled, which might explain
why it isn't working.

You can use the free version of Agent Ransack, to make it
easier to find the files you're looking for. That will tell
you that yes, there is a notepad.exe on the machine. It's not
as fast as Everything.exe, but it's still good. I use it
on all sorts of OSes here. Maybe you will locate the
errant Notepad.exe with that ?

https://www.mythicsoft.com/agentransack/

Both Notepad and Wordpad are available. Notepad has limited
file size. But, it works. Wordpad can accept extremely
large files (I fed it something about 2GB in size yesterday),
but it drifts off into unconsciousness on Windows 10 if you
do that. It will say "Not responding" and when the "Not
responding" messages goes away, well... it's not really
responding, "it's just dead Jim". I kill it from Task
manager and move on.

I eventually opened the file in Linux in Gedit, but it
took 40 minutes, and it took 10x the memory as the file
size. Even when the loading bar says the file is loaded,
the loading process is only half-done.

If only I could have my copy of BBEDIT from the Mac,
then I'd be happy.

And before someone says Notepad++, while there's
a 64 bit version, it seems to have a 32 bit engine.
And it chokes on large files too. I don't think the
program is 64-bit from end to end.

Chrome is not likely to be an App.

https://www.theverge.com/2017/12/19/...-download-link

*******

In a command prompt window, you "cd" to the place holding
chrome.7z (approx 150MB) and setup.exe (approx 1MB).

cd /d C:\path\to\these\files

if a chromium installation:

setup.exe --uninstall

if a chrome installation:

setup.exe --uninstall --multi-install --chrome --system-level

You would need to use the equivalent of "about:" to figure
out what you've got. I used to think that only Chrome was
promoted for a dollar a copy, as "drive-by installs". But
someone posted one day, that they'd received a copy of
Chromium that way. So I cannot make an assumption about
what you got, and you'll have to do your best to get the
program to admit its identity.

The URL bar accepts chrome:// and if you type that
much of it, it will show you the main URL value to
get to a menu of all the rest of the chrome:// shortcuts.

If you have a decent search program, like Agent Ransack
or Everything.exe , you should be able to search for
chrome.7z and find the install archive.

Installation of Google products, leaves a couple "updater"
services. These will not uninstall until the last Google
product is removed. However, we know these don't really
uninstall at all, and they just sit there. That will be
a separate little project for you :-) As you can see in
this article, it's a new hobby for you. I don't know
if there is a "proper, Google certified" way to do this
or not.

While it does not remove it from the computer Cortina can be removed
from the taskbar, by right clicking the taskbar, select Cortina, and
click hid.

left click the MS icon, select the All program icon. (four dots and
bars). Scroll down to Windows accessories, and pin it to the start menu.

Alternatively Find notepad.exe in the folder C:\WINDOWS\system32 and pin
it to the start menu and/or taskbar.

PS: If you right click on an icon in the start menu it gives you a list
of the previously opened programs. This is a nice feature that I use a lot.

Not to give either of you a hard time, but that's Cortana, not
Cortina.

Do a search on Cortina, and you'll find links to a town in Italy, not
to a Windows program.

As is so often the case, Microsoft has done a poor job of giving
Cortana a name. Being so similar to Cortina, it's almost an invitation
to spell it wrong.

I just ran across what you are saying about Chrome. I installed it on
my computer some years ago but uninstalled it because it was inferior to
Firefox.

However, even though it is not on the computer when When I use Open With
to open a file Chrome is given as an option.

I don't know how to remove it from the Open With menu, but I never use
Open With. It is frustrating that it was not removed with the
uninstall.

PS: If you select Chrome from the Open With option, it bounces back as
Chrome is not present.

Maybe you only lost the shortcut and file association. It's still there
(c:\windows\notepad.exe), at least, in my Win 10.

Control Panel/remove programs? It doesn't show up under apps or programs
either. Agent Ransack gives it's location but is not there when I go to
Windows-Explorer. This Chrome reminds me of a nasty virus the way it
keeps
out of sight. It had to have been installed with something I downloaded.

Also, where is Notepad? Has that been removed from W-10?

I don't understand why there is so much bad info online when seeking help
with these things. I get better advice here.

TIA

Notepad, Write (aka "Word Pad, and Calculator

Yep! That's where you have to find it now. Why these dumb changes I'll
never know. A new PC person wouldn't know it existed.
