Where the h*ll do I find the disk-cleanup-settings? It seems to want
to launch straight to work so I haven't tried starting it.

I filed an entry in the Hub, complaining about putting
my Downloads folder as a tick box in "cleanmgr.exe".
Several times, I've come "this close" to leaving
that stupid thing ticked and enabled.

I use my Downloads folder as a giant dumping ground.
I use "file name tagging" and "searches" to organize my
assets. I don't have a zillion little folders using
the Dewey Decimal System to sort stuff. My "Downloads"
is the entire enchilada, and it should *not* be
in that menu as something to delete.

If they insist Downloads be there, well, how about
we put an entry for System32, and see how the folks
at Microsoft feel about *their* stuff being deleted
by stupidity like this. There would rapidly be
fewer than 700 million dissatisfied customers if
they made it posslble to "gut" the OS using cleanmgr.exe.

Who thinks this stuff up ? Dennis the Menace ?

That Downloads folder issue has been present for
a while now. It's not a recent innovation.

If you use cleanmgr.exe then *slow down*. Read
the options really carefully. Don't be in a rush.

1. Right-click on the C: drive and choose "Properties".
A properties window will appear.
2. Select the "General" tab on the properties window.
3. Click the "Disk Clean-up" button on the "General" tab.
Disk Clean-up will first take some time to count up the space
which can be cleaned up. Disk Clean-up will then show a "Disk
Clean-up" window like the one shown on the web page.

While Disk Clean-up counts up the space which can be cleaned up, it
is not actually doing the clean-up. That only happens after you
click "OK" on the "Disk Clean-up" window.

Aah thanks. I was thinking that in keeping with the new philosophy
there would be something in settings.

In settings there is a tool for freeing up disk space on your computer.

Don't click that box, if you didn't mean to.

Read the settings *carefully*.

Did I mention backups ?

Same here.

Also, today, 2018-10-11 Thursday, when I clicked on
"check for updates", I do not get the 1809; still on 1803!

Is there a check for something before ms says there is an
update???? I've had 4 cumulative updates for 1803 since
2018-10-7!!

The dependencies have to be resolved before the next
package can be considered.

Obviously, they do some things in parallel. You will
see an Adobe Flash, a Windows Defender definitions update,
a MSRT monthly, plus a Cumulative, all come in at the same time.

I don't know if a Patch Tuesday Cumulative and an OS Upgrade would
start loading in parallel though. That sounds like too much
of a good thing. They would likely proceed sequentially, with
a reboot in-between.

And an OS Upgrade needs a Servicing Stack update, but those
could show up several months before they're needed.

*******

You should check your Windows Update history tab and
see if something is failing over and over again. Note that
a patch like KB1234567 could have more than one revision
number and could install Rev1 on Tuesday and Rev2 on
Wednesday. This is sometimes done to repair the
actual History view and make it read correctly!
(In other words, not a real patch, but a bandaid
of sorts.)

Paul
