Default had to re-register initpki.dll

winxp sp3, ie7

ran avast full scan; malwarebytes full scan; no identified problems.

A friend's computer stopped logging into secure sites. AOL email login gave
the "site cannot be found" display. After checking the suggested security
settings in ie7 which were all correct, I found that windows update would
not work. The error was 0x800b001. A google search listed several dlls
that should be registered. I did that, found that windows update worked,
and the computer could access secure sites. A later search found that
registering initpki.dll was probably the fix to access secure sites.

My friend claims that all she did was access AOL email and several online
shopping sites as she has been doing for months. Then the next day, she
could not access any secured sites. I looked at her history and did not
find anything strange. She did not install any programs. I do that because
she does not know how.

My question is how did initpki.dll become unregistered? What unregisters a
dll? Can this be prevented?

Some web sites can have "malware" that can turn off "features" or
remove files. Best thing to is to "practice" "Safe Computing" and
have a good anti-virus system/
