Default Network problem with XP sp 2

Hi,

New system, came with Windows XP sp2 pre-installed.
Everything works fine, the system was hooked to the home network and could
connect immediately to the internet but it can't see or be seen by the either
computers on the network (one with W2k Prof latest patch, the other WinXP sp
1).
I can ping the other machines by IP address but not by name. The others
cannot ping the sp 2 machine (either by IP or name)

I have checked Hans-Georg blog:
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxNetwork.htm

very nice and detail thank you, but unfortunately I was not able to make it
work.

I am stumped. Any idea

Thanks
Mike

There are 2 issues...

1) XP-SP2 pinging other computers:

I can ping the other machines by IP address but not by name.

This is a name resolution issue.

- Go to TCP/IP advanced properties, and ensure
NetBIOS-over-TCP/IP is enabled.

- Go to a command prompt and do an "ipconfig /all" and report the "Node
Type".
If the Node Type is P-to-P, that's the problem.
Post back, and we'll show you how to fix that.

2) Assymetric Pinging:

The others cannot ping the sp 2 machine (either by IP or name)

This is almost certainly the Firewall on the SP2 machine blocking the pings.
Go to Control Panel | Windows Firewall, and enable the
File and Print Sharing exception.

This will permit machines on your local LAN to access the SP2 machine.
It will also enable ICPM echo requests ( pings ).

Thank you Ron for your quick and detailed message.

Yes, I had NetBios over TCP/IP enabled and have run the ipconfg /all command.
The node type is unknown. Is this the problem?

The settings on the firewall are as you said. File and Print Sharing
enabled. I have even disabled the Firewall just to test, the same result.

That's the reason I am stomped. Basically everything looks like it should
work but it doesn't. It makes me nuts. I have spent many hours trying almost
everything.

Thanks
Mike

Thank you for the link, but as I said before the network is already set up
and working, except the new machine that has XP sp 2 on it.
This system can connect to the internet, can ping the other computers on the
network by IP but not by name. The other computers cannot ping the XP sp2
machine at all.

Fixed.

Formatted everything, re-installed XP and apply all the patches but didn't
upgrade to sp2.
Now, after 12 hours of hell everything works OK.

Thanks to all that responded
