7-Zip doesn't appear to have a 'check for updates' button in its Help,
which would aid greatly the ability to always have the latest version.

So? Is it that hard to check http://www.7-zip.org/ from time to time?

Not easy if you have a memory like mine :-)

My tendency is to check every time I bring it up, since I don't use it
very often these days.

For Fokke Nauta: There are utilities that claim to keep track of your
installed software and find updates for you. But I've never tried one,
in fact I've never even researched them.

Thanks, Gene, I know there are.
But most software I have check for their own updates, and for the rest:
why check for updates when it works? Not every update is an improvement ...

Heresy! At least according to the provider of the program :-)

I usually accept the updates that are offered, and even, as with 7-Zip,
check on my own and install new updates, but nonetheless, I agree with
you - I'm just inconsistent, apparently.

use Secunia to notify you automatically of updates

As I have already said more than once in this thread, I prefer not to do
that.

Well, I never trust updates. I always have them run in an VMWare
environment and see what it is. If I like it, I install in in my
workstation I work with ...
