Windows App Downloads from store
I haven't downloaded anything from the Windows Store for a long time,
but recently tried to download a game. The store insists that I can't download anything until an adult logs on and says it's OK. I wish I was young enough for that to make sense - let's just say I retired a few years back. I checked my account info on the store site and it has my correct birthday. I have tried various suggestions found by googling, but nothing works. Any ideas? |

I hope the problem isn't in there somewhere. https://www.thurrott.com/windows/win...ental-controls ******* The only two places I can see for birthdate in my MSA, is "Account" and in a "Profile" screen for Contacts. Whether those are tied together, to keep you honest, I wasn't about to test to find out. I'm surprised a profile or contact type info, needs a birthdate. Since birthdate is used in security questions (as a part of identity theft detection), it should not be left lying about on computers. I expect the information is stored in the Cloud, and not on the PC. So the "vetting" during a purchase, should be on the Microsoft end. You have your MSA, they look up on their end, and decide whether you meet the rating for the item. And I personally, would not want to try to fix this by "making a new account". It's one thing to mess up something in your computer room, quite another to mess up something in The Cloud, where you have no control whatsoever. The one thread I found in the Answers forum, wasn't of any real help. The person seemed to have similar issues to you, age entered indicates a mature adult, but the item in question still couldn't be downloaded, indicating there is a blockage somewhere else. ******* There are phone numbers here, but I don't know if they would actually be able to help with a question like this. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...ontact-support Paul |

Hmm, seeing one member as adult and another member as child must only be presented after adding another member to the account. I have never added another member so there is just me, so I'm not listed under the Family pane (to see me as adult). With only a single member (the one that created the account), it must be an adult account. |

When I created the account, I added my birthdate. Although I opened the Hotmail account back in 2000, I was an adult long before that (I became legal-aged back in 1974). I created the account as an adult, not as a child. Twould think tots simply lie about their birthdate when they create a new account. Any site requesting your birthday does so only to legally protect themselves, not the user. "For child accounts, ..." Never created any. "Account thinks I'm a child". Not happened to me ... yet. Only one member in the account: the same one that created the account back when I was 44. So, there is only one member in the Microsoft account (me) and I was already an adult long ago when I first created a Hotmail account. I thought Microsoft used to have a "Member since" value in the account profile but I cannot find it now. |

When I go to the Microsoft family site, it only shows me. It doesn't say Adult. It doesn't say Child. I have never used the family features in Windows 10 (or any previous version). If I go to the page that would let me add family members, there are no members listed. I will reread all your posts and see if I missed something. (By the way, I am using my Microsoft account on two different PCs here. They both have the problem. When at the Microsoft site, both are listed as my devices as they should be, but neither can download apps from the store. Pat |

When I follow the link to make changes (account.microsoft.com/family), it just displays a page saying how great family settings are (Empower and simplify your family's digital life ADD A FAMILY MEMBER). There is one link at the bottom of that page that says "Change a child's profile settings". When I select that, it asks me to login and then sends me back to that "Empower and simplify your family's digital life ADD A FAMILY MEMBER" page. |

No, I hadn't been to that site yet, but I just tried it. My birthdate is already correct so they suggest sending a copy of my birth certificate or driver's license to Microsoft. I think I would rather start from scratch than send sensitive personal information to Microsoft. |

I think I would rather start from scratch than send sensitive personal information to Microsoft. They should be honoring the current setting, and "deriving" any information from those fields correctly. It's not that the actual fields need correcting. You say they already reflect your birth date, so setting them to the same exact value again isn't going to achieve anything. This is a technical issue on their end, and should be approached that way. You've done everything possible on your end, to verify and/or fix it. In the three tier support model, fixing this is likely to require someone in one of the upper tiers. As I doubt the lower level people know how to fix something like this. Paul |

If I go to the page that would let me add family members, there are no members listed. Members are only listed after adding. -i.e. you have to add a Microsoft account(MSA) to see the classification assigned to each account. After you sign in with your MSA and add another MSFT account(not your own) classified as adult or child then an invite is sent(email or text to phone). The added MSA will remain in pending until the invite is accepted and you approve the acceptance. Once the process is completed, your MSA(assuming it's profile has the correct adult age) will show as adult and the added members will show with their respective assigned classification status(adult or child). If you've never added a member, then what you reported as seeing is accurate. -- ....winston msft mvp windows experience |

That's an entirely different issue than account services on Family safety. If your birth date year for the same MSA is correct in your Profile, XBox, Skype, etc. profiles *and* no one else has added you as 'child account' then your only resort is to walk through the hoops in the requests provided by the MSFT Support organization. Provide the requested content, they've little leeway to escalate an issue until you prove you are you. The alternative, create a new MSA, use it to logon to Win10 on the same device, and use it if the Store is accessible, then close the other account. - Note: If you have a billable service on the account you will have to cancel that service prior to closing the account. Good luck. -- ...winston msft mvp windows experience 2007-2016, insider mvp 2016-2017 |
