Because Firefox is in active development, but Thunderbird is only
(some would say thankfully) in maintenance mode therefore the
following versions were released from the same codebases ...

TB24.0 FF24.0 FF24.0ESR
TB24.1 FF25.0 FF24.1ESR
TB24.2 FF26.0 FF24.2ESR
TB24.3 FF27.0 FF24.3ESR
TB24.4 FF28.0 FF24.4ESR
TB24.5 FF29.0 FF24.5ESR
TB24.6 FF30.0 FF24.6ESR

now since it's time for a major FF ESR release ...

TB31.0 FF31.0 FF31.0ESR

have been released

The code in Thunderbird, involves a browser engine.
Which means Thunderbird maintenance is potentially tied
to bugs in Firefox. Even if no Thunderbird-specific
code was changed at all, there might be reasons
to import new Firefox code and re-release Thunderbird.
If Thunderbird was not HTML-enabled, this would
not be necessary.

Yeah Firefox didn't miss a beat, but they didn't bother with Thunderbird
until 5 versions later for a release a public release. Yes we get it
what product they really don't care much for.

Yeah, users are supposed to stay quiet and don't interfere with what
they feed you. Yes I got it.

Maybe you missed something. I am, in fact, updating from 30 (which was
not marked beta) to 31 as we speak.

I updated both FF and TB with no problems whatsoever.

Thanks for the reminder :-)

Thanks to that, I updated TB too - and it did skip a lot of release
numbers.

But neither TB nor FF reminded me - I thought they were *supposed* to
remind me. Could it have been something I said?

If you turned updates off at some point, it won't.

The Windows 8 Modern Interface seems to be a bit too difficult for
Mozilla to figure out. Shame.

Thank God.

The Modern Interface is a disaster on a laptop or desktop. From the
prereviews of Windows 9 it is being reconsidered as a viable desktop and
laptop interface. It has definitely been significantly pushed to the
back ground in Windows 8.1

It could be that Microsoft is refusing to release its SDK for Windows 8
for programmers to start developing new applications for Windows 8.

My question about why I was not reminded was possibly intended

Yes, but I'd argue that the lack of users was due to the terrible state

Moe: "A longer tail."

I don't know that I would call it a "disaster". More like "unnecessary"
and "a step backward in usability."

Perhaps a few people do like it, but the way it works is out of step
with all other major operating systems, Windows, Mac and Linux.
Anybody who only learns how to use a Windows 8 computer may have
difficulty using a real one.

Well, I guess this will be your new OS then.
