Default lsass.exe: Error prevents machine from booting

To all experts:

When booting my Windows XP pro machine I get the following
error message:

"lsass.exe: Invalid parameter was passed to service or
function"

The login window appears in the background, and I can
enter username and password, but nothing happens. When
confirming the error message, the computer reboots and
returns with the same error message.

It seems to me that this behaviour is similar to what Matt
Appleby described in his posting dated 02/13/03

Since this is a rather urgent matter any help is greatly
appreciated!
Manfred
