Default Browser Problems

I'm running XPHome, SP3, with IE8, Firefox 16.0.1, and Chrome. With all
three browsers, I get 'error' messages when trying to go to sites:

IE8:
Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage
Diagnose Connection Problems

Firefox:
The connection was reset

The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.
The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
moments.
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make
sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

Chrome:
No data received
Unable to load the webpage because the server sent no data.
Error 324 (net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE): The server closed the connection
without sending any data.

I'm running real-time anti-malware-virus, and have done manual scans, and
there seems to be no problems there. HijackThis shows no problems. This
is only on this on machine; all others in the house are fine.

Any ideas?

A ipconfig /flushdns have fixed the problem on all browsers, but I know
it will be back. Or, perhaps it wasn't that flush that fixed this, it's
just intermittent.

Still, any ideas?

TIA

That more or less proves it is not a browser problem

Actually, it was pretty clear it wasn't a browser problem from the
outset, as all three browsers were having the same connection issue. If
it had just been one of them, that would have pointed to the browser.
