Cannot see other PC on my LAN or set up printer.
Win XP Pro all updates in.
Other Win XP Pro laptops see other PCs. Workgroup all the same = MEOW ! I checked. This XP Pro PC workgroup is MEOW. This laptop will not let me see other PCs or set up printer on other pc BUT ... I found a Samsung printer and will print to it. This printer is on the PC I want to see but now it does not see it but the printer is usable. ???? If I go to My Network Places, Microsoft Windows Network, it sees the common workgroup MEOW but not the PCs. Other PCs see all PCs. Including Win XP Pro and Win7 Pro. Click the workgroup name and get: --------------------------- Microsoft Windows Network --------------------------- Meow is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. No more connections can be made to this remote computer at this time because there are already as many connections as the computer can accept. --------------------------- OK --------------------------- WHAT to do ? I need the other printer. The printer is seen and usable on other Win XP Pro laptops. |

No more connections can be made to this remote computer at this time === because there are already as many connections as the computer can accept. === That last line, shows the limits of Microsoft generosity. Windows Server OSes have "infinite" connections, compared to the Desktop OSes which have maybe 20 connections as a limit. And it's possible that for file sharing, a file sharing thing uses 2 connections, so you could only share with 10 devices or so. The part I'm having trouble with, is getting the OS to list what is currently connected. So you can ascertain what's burned up the connections, and whether it's all kosher or not. There's no Get-SMBConnection on my WinXP Powershell. OK, finally got an article with some info. https://www.howtogeek.com/school/win...ring/lesson10/ Here, you can see my VM making a connection to the file share on my Typing Machine. https://i.postimg.cc/9F5tv20z/session-monitor.gif But the thing is, if the machine hosts a printer, then the print connections could count against the limit too. I doubt this crude attempt at "accounting" is good enough to figure out what's borked all your connections. You've used them up somehow. You need a utility that can list that consumption. There's got to be some API in the OS for this. Paul |

I need the other printer. The printer is seen and usable on other Win XP Pro laptops. That's a limit enforced by Microsoft. It relates to software license. XP Home = 5 max. XP Pro = 10 max. Server = more than 10 (depends on license). The limit applied to the number of inbound connections to Microsoft Network based resources; including general named pipes and mail slots. The latter two may be used by third party softwares. https://gokulakrishnang.wordpress.com/2009/09/16/solution-no-more-connections-can-be-made-to-this-remote-computer/ https://web.archive.org/web/20031106044744/http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;314882 Unfortunately, there's no real solution. Because the limitation is hard coded in the OS software, one has to switch to a Windows edition to have a higher connection limit. If the Windows is already a server edition, the licen will need to be updated to the one with a higher number of connections. A workaround is to decrease the connection timeout as mentioned in both of the above web page, but this is only applicable if the existing connections are not being used simultaneously. Other workaround is to use third party network service software to share files and/or printers. Entirely avoiding the use of Microsoft Network. |
