W10 WINDOWS EXPLORER Q
I want to use Windows Explorer or some such to display the 'details'
for both folders and files to include their sizes. My displays only show that info for only a few, usually the first few. Must be something I don't know. Help? Johnny |

But I can't seem to download/install any of the suggested programs that do this. I just get garbage and unwanted downloads. Anyone know of downloadable free program to do what I want? Thanks Johnny While I know of no way to show the size of the files with in a folder, you can change the rows shown in File Explorer (Old Windows Explorer) by right clicking in the column headers and selecting the columns you want to see. There are several different columns that are available. I've been using "Directory Opus" for a few years now & it's terrific. Not free, but worth every cent. Cheers Gary |

Try MultiCommander, it's free! http://multicommander.com/ It features a menu choice under Tools / Calculate folder size and the corresponding keyboard shortcut Shift-Alt-Return to achieve what you ask for. -- Gianni |

Try MultiCommander, it's free! http://multicommander.com/ I've been using MultiCommander for several months now, and I also like it a lot. But someone (in this newsgroup, I think) just recommended DirectoryOpus, and I downloaded and installed its trial version yesterday to give it a try. As must as I like MultiCommander, I think Directory Opus is *much* better. Even though DirectoryOpus is not free, I will probably decide to buy it and use it instead of MultiCommander. |

Hi Ken, Directory Opus comes at a high price but I will give it a try. But, very important, I have understimated FreeCommander!!! http://freecommander.com/en/details/ It's free and has exactly the feature than Johnny asked! Menu Folder, Size of folders and the corresponding keyboard shortcut Alt+F9 Differently from MultiCommander that calculate the folder size only for the selected folder, this option activate the folders size calculation and display for every folder. However it is a time-consuming and resource-consuming task so is better to activate it only when really needed. -- Gianni |

But I liked MultiCommander more, and DirectoryOpus much more than either. Yes, give DirectoryOpus a try. I spent most of today playing with its options and reading its (very long) pdf manual. Even though it's a high price, it didn't take me long to decide that it's worth the price. I bought it about an hour ago. I say its manual is very long, but I don't mean that in any negative way. There's not much software that's documented as thoroughly as this is. Just out of curiosity, looking at your name, let me ask whether you are in Italy. If so, what part? I'm in gli Stati Uniti, but I love Italia, having visited there nearly thirty times. Most recently I spent two weeks in Roma last November. |

There's not much software that's documented as thoroughly as this is. The first thing I noted is the space it occupies: DirectoryOpus 100 MB FreeCommander 30 MB MultiCommander 20 MB To have a portable version you must pay some additional dollars. FreeCommander and MultiCommander are easy and free to setup as portable. Then the complexity of its install wizard, substantially asking for replacing the Windows File Explorer functionality. I prefer not to play those risky games, it is so easy to break things in Windows. And it is so easy to launch a program when needed. What are the features you need that are unique to DirectoryOpus? The first thing I noted is the space it occupies: DirectoryOpus 100 MB FreeCommander 30 MB MultiCommander 20 MB So DirectoryOpus is 80MB bigger than MultiCommander. 80 million sounds like a big number, but at today's prices, when a 1TB drive is typically about 50USD, 80MB is about 4/100 of a penny's worth. So as far as I'm concerned, that's nothing. To have a portable version you must pay some additional dollars. Yes. But I don't want/need a portable version. FreeCommander and MultiCommander are easy and free to setup as portable. Yes. No question about that. Portable or not, it's cost is the big disadvantage of DirectoryOpus. Then the complexity of its install wizard, Complexity? None at all, as far as I'm concerned. substantially asking for replacing the Windows File Explorer functionality. That's entirely optional. The choice is up to you. I prefer not to play those risky games, it is so easy to break things in Windows. Risky? I don't find it risky at all. And it is so easy to launch a program when needed. What are the features you need that are unique to DirectoryOpus? I don't want to go into great detail. Instead I recommend that you give it a try (a 90-day trial is free), and see what features it has (if any) that you find desirable. Just out of curiosity, looking at your name, let me ask whether you are in Italy. If so, what part? I'm in gli Stati Uniti, but I love Italia, having visited there nearly thirty times. So as far as I'm concerned, that's nothing. My mistake not to explain my thinking ... It feels bloated, poorly engineered. Yes. But I don't want/need a portable version. I like portable versions not because I can place it on a flash-drive and use from there, that sometimes can be a desiderable feature, but because they don't touch anything in the system. Furthermore the settings are saved in the same program folder where is installed making easier to manage the wole thing. substantially asking for replacing the Windows File Explorer functionality. That's entirely optional. The choice is up to you. Yes, optional, but set as the default option in the installation wizard. I have installed Directory Opus and it required too many attention to change too many (about 10?) settings intended to make it the default for too many things. I prefer not to play those risky games, it is so easy to break things in Windows. Risky? I don't find it risky at all. The risk lies in having it as the default file browser. I don't want to go into great detail. Instead I recommend that you give it a try (a 90-day trial is free), and see what features it has (if any) that you find desirable. I have installed it but I was disappointed for the reasons explained. I have many software in my pc, to test, to investigate for interesting features. If they don't interfere with my system they are welcome. If not, they are very soon uninstalled unless they have features I can't live without. Your English is great! I wish my Italian was as good. Oh no, with my English may be I can write a technical mail but I can't survive in the true world ... Try to write me in Italian! I've been in Milano several times, but I've only been in the Piacenza train station, when my train stopped there. This is our destiny, to be seen only on the go ... -- Gianni |
