Device Manager - Not Responding
I ran device manager with view mode set to "by devices" and it was OK.
Then changed view mode to "by resources" and selected an item relating to the onboard video display, and right clicked/properties. I clicked on a tab or 2, but clicking on one of them, got the "not responding" message. had to kill the device manager. Now, starting up Device Manager, it obviously goes to the tab/item/properties that was last selected and just gives the "not responding" message. I'd like to run the device manager from the command line, giving arguments on the command line to select the "by devices" view, which will hopefully get out of the not responding bit. Is this possible. Hope someone knows :-) Cheers Gary |

Device Manager - Not Responding
Fixed the problem.
Booted to safe mode & ran Device Man. which was OK, then rebooted to normal user & all OK. :-) On Sat, 16 Jul 2011 00:20:52 +0930, Gary Dingle wrote: I ran device manager with view mode set to "by devices" and it was OK. Device Manager - Not Responding
Have you rebooted then reopened device manager? If so, and it still does the same thing, go to Start, Run, type in devmgmt.msc and press enter. Does it come up in the default view then? -- SC Tom |

The download for it, is also on this page. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/311272 devcon resources * output.txt Opening output.txt right now, I see 167 responses, with this for the video card. PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0291&SUBSYS_21DB19F1&REV_A1\4&78E EA88&0&0030 Name: NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GT/GTO Device is currently using the following resources: MEM : fd000000-fdffffff MEM : c0000000-dfffffff MEM : fc000000-fcffffff MEM : 000a0000-000bffff IO : cc00-cc7f IO : 03b0-03bb IO : 03c0-03df IRQ : 16 ******* http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914231 "An .msc file for the MMC is closely related to Microsoft Internet Explorer. The .msc file uses the same .dll files as Internet Explorer. Additionally, the .msc file contains a list of all the .dll files that are used by Internet Explorer and the MMC." So that doesn't tell you what is broken, but indicates how the engine is built. devmgmt.msc accepts an environment variable, as described here. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/241257 set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 And this article, shows launching device manager with an inline environment variable. But the syntax doesn't make much sense to me. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../bb457107.aspx Nothing I've seen so far, mentions anything about resetting the thing. If it is actually based on Internet Explorer engine, any chance it may have "cached" information ? What if you clear the Internet Explorer cache ? Another option might be to try running it in Safe Mode, on the chance that it won't behave the same. Paul |
