ES is not a newsreader it is a newserver.
Thunderbird is reasonable and free.

Eternal September is not a newsreader, it's a news provider. Newsreaders
would be programs like Windows Live, Thunderbird, Xnews, Forte Agent, etc.

If you are looking for a new news provider,

Any particular reason not to use Eternal September? They're about as good as
anyone. If you think you'll get away from some of the posters here by going
to a different provider, forget it. The different providers have access to
(most of) the same groups you see here.

If you want a newsreader (software to install in your computer), the
best place to ask is in the proper newsgroup: news.software.readers

If you want a news *server* (a host that provides articles and
accepts your posted articles), I'm sure there's a newsgroup but I
don't know which one.

Well, at least you didn't point the OP to
alt.binaries.news-server-comparison, which despite its
helpful-sounding name, is quite the cess pool.

As others have pointed out, if you're looking for a newsreader, this
is a program that resides on *your* computer and is used to
send/retrieve newsgroup articles. Mozilla Thunderbird might be a good
one to try.

IF (OTOH) you're looking for a free newsSERVER other than Eternal
September, you might want to look AIOE.org's public usenet server

into http://www.aioe.org/
