XP installed, but I have a few questions...
The shortcuts on the taskbar can be activated by right
clicking on the taskbar, (you may have to unlock the taskbar first) then go to toolbars and select quick lauch. I wouldn't get to wound up in haveing the latest driver for everything, it is often better to wait until you have a problem then tackle it. As far as a driver not being XP authorised, I tend to find that very few, especially recent versions of drivers, are. Cheers -----Original Message----- I bought a new computer yesterday and installed XP last night, but now I am going through the drivers to make sure all are up to date. Microsoft's updates are all installed and my software disks have been updated to the newest also, and here is where I still don't know what I should do. 1) When I look at the hardware device manager, it shows that I have some Human Interface Device; notably a Cypress USB Mouse. Should I delete this line and see what happens? I already have a line further down that reads Mice and other pointing devices; A4Tech USB Port Mouse. I figured that only 1 mouse device would/should show up but I see 2 lines showing a mouse. Cypress was listed before I installed the A4Tech trackball, now they are both listed on the hardware list. 2) My keyboard shows a Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard; yet I am running a ViewSonic Office Keyboard. I loaded the disk that came with it, but under programs it only lists it and has only one option under the program section called Uninstall. Usually under programs you get a program to run, maybe a doc file about the program, sometimes a few auxilliary programs, and an uninstall program; this only has an uninstall option. The keyboard obviously works as I type this, and even a few of the special hot buttons work; but should I be looking for a driver for this keyboard? 3) My monitor is showing up as a Plug and Play Monitor, but should I find the XP driver for this monitor? I downloaded a INF file from the maker but I couldn't tell if it was a 95/98 or XP INF file. When I went to try it, XP is telling me it is an unsigned driver and recommended I don't install; I didn't. On my 98SE machine, I used generic monitor until I found my driver and it reported correctly under drivers after that. This monitor is a CTL 900VX and I thought it would show up as that in the drivers section. After only 12 hours, maybe 3 hours of use, the computer has only had a few minor problems. About 4 times so far different programs have locked up and the window had to be closed. 2 of these were from IE having some form of problem and the other 2 were from installing software for the devices in the machine. This morning though, I went ahead and updated all the updates from Microsoft and the machines seems to be running fine. Only odd thing for me, was that I didn't know how to find programs. Turns out it is in the start at the bottom. :-) Oh, does anyone know how to get an icon to show up on the bottom for Show Desktop or equivelant? I would like a way to show the desktop to start a shortcut to a program or something since I sometimes have a few windows open at any one time. I could always use the Start/Program/Choose App type of scenario, but I would prefer to use Show Desktop, hit Shortcut. It is also a good thing to get them MS certified (WHQL tested = and passed), though there are some that do not fall under the testing. = Sometimes you have to ignore the incompatibility warning to get what you = want to work. But as far a sound/video card drivers, I recommend that = you at least have them certified, or in final release version. |
