Default "Some Updates Could Not Be Installed" problem

Hi all:

Yesterday I wiped the hard drive on my laptop and installed Win XP SP2
from CD. I then immediately went to the Windows update site to get
SP3 and other goodies. Looks like SP3 installed OK, upgrade to MSIE 7
was good, but I was stuck with 2 (now 3 today) updates that fail to
install. The three updates a

Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - May 2008 (KB890830)
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP
(KB947864)
IBM - Other Hardware - IBM PM Device

I've tried installing these several times, sometimes all at once,
sometimes one at a time, but no success.

Is this an artifact of SP3, or some other problem?

Any way to get these updates installed?

Beyond the message "Some Updates Could Not Be Installed" and the list
of updates there's no error codes or other information that might
point the way to solve this problem.

TIA

When you say 'now, today...' I am inferring that you have not restarted the
system again today. I would try a restart or two. The IE, and MSRT should go
in then. The IBM thing I don't know about.

See if the information in this article helps. Note: While the title of the
article only mentions repair installation, it's been reported in these
newsgroups that the suggested fix may help when the issue occurs after a clean
installation.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP installation

Good luck

Probably should have been clearer. What I meant was that yesterday
there were 2 updates listed as not installing while today 3 are
listed. I'm thinking another one slipped in - the IBM one I believe -
while I was trying stuff last evening and this morning. I've
restarted multiple times at this point.
