1. Right click My Computer
2. Select Properties
3. Select Computer Name tab
4. Click the "Change" button near the bottom of the window
5. Enter a shorter name.

Workgroup or network name? I can only guess with the info at hand. :-)

Sorry, I've totally lost what this name is now, I gave it during the set up
when reinstalling XP yesterday, I am sure someone must know from the
position of it in the link below

C:\Documents and Settings\Philip.SAMSUNG-0975C43\My Documents

"Philip.SAMSUNG-0975C43", is it possible to change this to a shorter name at

Actually that's appears to be the name of your profile
and that notation cannot be changed even if you rename your profile.

I suggest simply creating a new profile such as Philip2
then delete the one causing problems

It's the account name.

You set up an account when you installed. And gave your name.
Apparently your name is "Philip.SAMSUNG-0975C43" :-)

If you look in the Control Panels, there is one for User Accounts.
Here the account name is "Dave Taylor".

*******

If you go to Control Panels again, only this time use the "System"
control panel, and then the "Computer Name" tab, you can see
computer name info. But I think you've got a weird user account
name instead. Maybe your "Computer Name" is Joe Bloggs ? :-)

Just a guess,
Paul

That doesn't look like a computer name, it looks like a user name.

It looks like an account was created by concatenating a name "Phillip" to a Machine Name.

Not unlike on my WinXP PC

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator.DLIPMAN-1

DLipman-1 in my WinXP computer's name.

However changing the machine name won't change the created Profile The Profile is now
based upon the SID.

A new account needs to be created. To get a shortened path.

OR...

One can SUBSTitute a drive letter for the path such as...
SUBST P: "C:\Documents and Settings\Philip.SAMSUNG-0975C43\My Documents"

Now "P:" represents the "My Documents" folder of the account without wasting ~60
characters of the of the NTFS max path length.

That's your User Name.
I like short names, like "a".
Create a new user and copy all your links, shortcuts, data,
etc, to the new user, then log in with the new name.
I would keep the old one for a while in case something
goes wrong with the new one.

You'll want to be careful of the lengths of any file names that are
saved in this user profile, because at some point they can become too
long and won't move/delete/etc...

for example: anything that comes after C:\Documents and
Settings\Philip.SAMSUNG-0975C43\My Documents should not be given too
large of a file or folder name.

Otherwise, there should be no problems at all with leaving the name the
way it is
