Add an imaging device not running since sp1 installed

I have a Packard Bell PC with the Diamond 1200 usb
scanner.
Since installing service pack 1 - the scanner shows in
device manager as unknown - with driver version 1.00.

Even upgrading the driver manually does not chaneg the
version - and running the wizard to add it as a an
imaging device does not work either - there is no
response.
