I show lots of them. Not going to count them all but well over 100.

Maybe that was during an outage ?

The retention seems to go back about a year or
so, with some September ones missing, so the
pattern is a bit weird looking. If I had to guess,
it's probably a restore from backup, causing a
certain "chunk" of stuff to go missing.

Which Paul is this?

If it is the usual Paul, then of course you have deleted your current
list and downloaded them again, right? I'm talking about messages on the
server, not messages on your hard drive.

Mine jumps from August 29 to October 2.

I won't see you in September...

You are correct. Sept is gone from the server.

It looks like you're right. I just retrieved all messages for the past
few months and there a big hole between August 30 and October 2.

ES has its own newsgroup for reporting such issues, which is:

eternal-september.support

Discuss there.

A proper newsreader will offer to save newsgroup posts for as long as you
have room to hold them. No need to rely on server retention these days. By
"these days" I mean since at least 1995 or so.

Somebody who newly subscribes to the group might want September's posts.
And then there is the fact that re-downloading is sometimes useful. Not
to mention the irony...

There are other NSPs around, some free, some very low cost. It's not the end
of the world if ES doesn't have something.

Not to mention the irony...

Thanks. I assumed he was trying to be serious, but apparently not.
