I think Windows XP makes that a bit simpler, but not by much. https://i.postimg.cc/0j0d1qDz/stereo...what-plays.gif Custom (manufacturer) control panels for the win. AC'97 and HDAudio pretty well have all those sorts of functions. Some of the whizzy PCI or PCI Express cards can be missing features, even though some have a DSP complex and their own firmware and should have all the functions. For example, my PCI cards had no working bass and treble knobs to adjust, and no software graphic equalizer either. Paul |

However, I have used audio/video stream capture software to snag the audio or video streams from web sites to view later or make sure the information is available should they remove it. I use Jaksta Media Recorder (payware), and have used its Applian Replay Media Catcher clone. I moved from Applian to Jaksta due to some licensing issue with Applian, like they turned to the subscriptionware licensing model versus Jaksta gives a lifetime license. I've found those robust, and they get updated often to accomodate when sites change their tactics. Those are both payware. Neither will capture RTMPe streams. Although it is not specifically a DRM scheme, it is being used that way. There are lots of choices for audio/video streaming capture, including some freeware (I tried many, but got disappointed with them). Some work as proxies while others work as web browser add-ons. Don't waste your time getting those that are screen capturing software. Those capture what shows on your monitor, which means you end up recording clicks, pops, halts, flutter, or other artifacts in rendering the stream. Stream capture software gives you the exact stream from the source rather than what gets rendered on your end. Also, stream capture software captures at the speed the server will deliver, not at the play rate of what is shown on the screen. Instead of having to watch a 2-hour seminar for 2 hours, it could get captured in 5-10 minutes (depends on the throttling at the server). As you noted, you don't want to use a microphone to record what comes out your speakers. That's what you get, too, when using screen capture softwa what you see or hear. Stream capture software retrieves the source of the stream. You get what they will deliver, not what your end produces. If you want only freeware solutions, ask in the alt.comp.freeware newsgroup. Just be aware there is a lot of noise over there due to trolls, malcontents, and peuriles. To stay with Audacity as the sole means of recording the audio produced at your end (not the stream, but the reproduction), I hunted around because I don't use Audacity. I found: https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/...omputer.h tml This looks to be similar to screen capture softwa you capture what your end reproduces instead of recording from the source. Maybe that's why you're trying to use Audacity, like to edit out clicks, pops, flutter, and slice out sections of hesitation. |

I remember a What-U-Hear feature back when I used a Creative sound card and their software. Been many years since then since the integrated (onboard) audio is good enough for my ears and for the content that I play (I don't listen much to music, and games produces mose of the high-end quality "noise" on my computer). Searching on What-U-Hear, I found the following article: https://mediarealm.com.au/articles/s...up-windows-10/ The article mentions Audacity, which the OP is using, along with WASAPI (Windows Audio Session API): https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/win...reaudio/wasapi Yet I didn't see mention of how to setup Audacity to use WASAPI. Searching on "audacity wasapi" found: https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/...windows.ht ml |

For Windows XP, that can only be possible if the sound card provide a loopback audio source such as Sound Blaster sound card's "What You Hear" input port. Or with a third party software such as Virtual Audio Cable (non free), or VB-Cable. https://vac.muzychenko.net/en/ https://vb-audio.com/Cable/ |

Hmm, I'm not sure "cheap" would best describe the product since the SE (Standard Edition) seems a little overly crippled compared to the PE (Pro Edition) and VE (VideoPro Edition). http://www.totalrecorder.com/features.htm SE: $18 PE: $36 VE: $54 From the comparison chart above, the SE "cheap" edition is missing: "Analog recording via sound card with an ability to listen to audio being captured" I'm guessing that means you don't need to use any of the backpanel ports on either the integrated or standalone audio hardware. Also missing in SE is: "Direct capturing (background recording) of an Internet audio stream" "Direct capturing (background recording) of an Internet video stream" Seemed the OP wants that. He didn't want to use a microphone to rerecord the audio out, so he wouldn't was just a screen recorder, either, but wants the grab the audio/video streams from a site. I use Jaksta Media Recorder, but I'm not sure I'd call it cheap ($30) unless by comparison you've been looking at much more pricey solutions. |

Dunno I am using v 8.6 SE and it does not seem to require anything but starting it while I am listening to anything, usually coming from line in but it also captures stuff from the mixer that I am getting online. I am not sure what that article is talking about. If I can hear it, I can record it. There is also a facility to set up a timer and go get a stream off the net unattended. I used it for a while when Paul Henry had his show in New Zealand. Maybe they crippled it in later versions. |
