hibernate PC

can i make my Windows XP home PC automaticley go on to hibernate when i click
the shut down button on the start menu with out having to press shift and
choosing the option

Yes you can. Click on Start - Control Panel - Power Options then click
on the Advanced tab. In the bottom half of the window is wehre you can
specify what will happen when you press the power button, sleep button,
or if you have a laptop what will happen when you close the lid.

on the Advanced tab. In the bottom half of the window is wehre you can
specify what will happen when you press the power button, sleep button,
or if you have a laptop what will happen when you close the lid.

Thanks for that. Is there any way (I didn't see one there) to change
what the _default_ choice _on pressing enter_ is? When I hit the Windows
key (or Start button) and select Turn Off Computer, I still like to be
presented with the options, but if I then press Enter, it doesn't pick
the one I want - is there a way to change which one it picks?

Hi John,

At the Shutdown menu you have four choices:

[Stand By] [Turn Off] [Restart] [Cancel]

When it first appears, the Stand By button is slightly brighter. If you
press your TAB key, the Turn Off button becomes slightly brighter. Press
the TAB key again and Restart is bright. Press TAB key again, and the
Cancel button has a dotted rectangle on it. The Enter key (or spacebar)
activates whichever button is highlighted. Or, you can press "S" key for
Stand by, "U" key for tUrn off, or "R" key for Restart. You can press ESC
key to Cancel. If you want to Hibernate instead of Stand by, hold shift
and press "H" key. (If Hibernate is enabled in Power Options.) The button
does not have to be highlighted to use any of the special keys.

To Hibernate: WinKey, U, shift+H

To Stand by: WinKey, U, S

To Shutdown: WinKey, U, U

To Restart: WinKey, U, R

(To Change your mind: WinKey, U, ESC

People with computers that do not have a Windows logo key can substitute
Ctrl+ESC instead of WinKey above.

POP QUIZ: At the shutdown, is the "u" of "Turn Off" under-lined?
If not: Right-click desktop, click Properties, click Appearance (tab).
Click "Effects" button. UN-check "Hide underlined letters for keyboard
navigation until I press the Alt key."

Microsoft did a very UN-smart thing by having that item checked by default.
When a right-click menu appears, if you press ALT to show the underlined
letters, you cancel the menu. Hold ALT while you right-click and the menu
appears and disappears too fast to read.
