Default windows live messenger crashes

Every time i attempt to play an online game using windows live messenger 8.1
it crashes when i try to download the software popup that appears. Trying to
play some other games resulted in the following being displayed:
Critical Error 3
The Messenger games service is unable to access a critical file. Please
close this window and launch a new game.
I used to be able to play games fine up until around a week ago. Have also
tried repairing the program (through add/remove programs) and this hasn't
worked. Any ideas?
Windows XP Pro SP2 if that helps.
Thanks
