As far as I know, the only requirement is that you install it on the same hardware (the same motherboard and CPU). And of course, make sure that you are entering the key correctly. Has anyone done it? Yes. Apparently, when you pay for it, the activation server records your hardware's global unique identifier (GUID). Then, if you do a fresh install, it will check the activation server to see if your current hardware matches the hardware that was used when buying the software. Additionally... Contrary to what everyone else says, you can upgrade to a 64 bit Windows 8 from a 32-bit prior version, simply by using a 64-bit copy of Windows 7 when you redo the download. Same thing as above, it still goes by your hardware. The second download probably won't work if you use different hardware when trying it. |

Don’t remember exact words, but it was informing me that “this is an upgrade and you cannot install windows 8” as clean installation (?) – it was something like that. Has anyone done it? Yes. Apparently, when you pay for it, the activation server records your hardware's global unique identifier (GUID). THANK YOU very much, John, This is correct, I think, in my case. I have downloaded Win8 pro on my HP laptop, and the desktop installation had been done on the other desktop Asus PC. That explains the rejection of my genuine key during the activation. However, I have managed to free one of mine 1GB hard drive and installed on it Win7 Ult. then proceeded with installation of Win8, with not problem. Thanks also for info on 32 64 version installation. I can see a lot of “problems” in future, if we are going to use a new mother board or hard drives doing the upgrades or reinstallation of Win8. So, here MS wasn’t particularly smart (?), giving us no more flexible options. Thanks again ! |

Maybe I'm mis-understanding your question, but I'll toss this in... ******* The latest Microsoft OSes, used the "double install method", to defeat any notion of upgrade. It worked for Windows 7 and it appears to work for Windows 8 too. I used the following method, placing the $39.99 Upgrade Edition on a blank hard drive. The method using the .bat file with the "slmgr /rearm" command in it, did not work. But the "Refresh Your PC" option did work to activate my install. This article provides two methods to activate, but only one of the methods works. "Activate by Refreshing the Windows 8 Upgrade" http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials...8-upgrade.html My purpose was not to install multiple copies of the same license key. Neither was it to try installing the same (basically OEM) copy of Windows on the same PC, over and over again rapidly. All I was doing, was one and only one install, but without "providing a qualifying OS". During the install, the $39.99 downloadable OS install did not see a qualifying OS. And the equivalent of the "double install method", is what worked. Paul |

Create a clean first partition of the size you want for the Win8 install, and restore the XP image on to the second partition & make it bootable (may need some fiddling with drive letters). Using the W8 upgrade, request it to install on the first partition. This creates a single partiton setup (no separate boot partiton which I find more convenient). Strangely it also creates a startup menu in Win8 asking if you wish to boot to the old XP installation (now 'delicensed' according to MS) which continues to work OK. Probably the same for Vista and W7 as well. Probably works the same if you install on to a second drive without overwriting the original drive. HTH Chris K |

That's a unique difference with Win8 (the dual boot startup menu if it finds another o/s boot manager files). - Earlier o/s (e.g. Vista, Win7, XP) when finding a previous o/s system files (boot manager) created a text based multi-boot menu. Win8 creates one within Win8 effectively running Win8 in order to present that Win8 GUI multi-boot menu. -- ....winston msft mvp |

Has anyone done it ? PLEASE SHARE your experience with me. I bought the $40 upgrade deal. I downloaded the .ISO and made the bootable DVD using Nero. I started with a brand new SSD drive on my SATA 1 connector on my motherboard. The DVD booted and installed Windows 8 with NO request for proving prior ownership of an earlier Windows product. I forget if I had to enter the Product Key - it's been several months - but I probably did. I didn't like Windows 8 after a few days, so I reinstalled Windows 7 from my retail install disk. |
