I forgot to add that the Safely
Remove icon appeared and it performed normally so I was able to remove the 2TB drive. Robert |

Don't you remember that I wanted the 2TB expressly for the 8500 and I already have a 1TB Seagate for the 8200: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822178107 mine is blue. I followed your instructions but I did something wrong: http://i65.tinypic.com/20j4ej5.jpg it only gave options for the E and I folder and I tried it with each with the same result. Robert Try creating a folder on the large 1.68TB partition. That used to be E:, maybe the drive letter has changed ? Whatever the drive letter of the 1.68TB output partition is, make a folder I:\8500_backups Go to the I: partition with File Explorer, right-click, select "Create, New Folder" and a new folder will be created. While the text for the folder name is selected, type a new name for the folder. Windows does not like it, if you write to the "root" of the drive. So I:\ is not the best choice for backups. When a computer gives me flak about this sort of thing, I make a folder I:\output and so on. And then place the file into the output one, as my choice. Windows doesn't mind that nearly as much. While you can install and use the TakeOwn context menu entry, for smashing the permissions on the 1.68TB drive, I hope that isn't the real reason this isn't working. ******* If you have separate disks for backing up the two computers, then the space management feature will work properly. If you run out of space, the oldest backup is discarded as a means to free up space. Paul |

Success!!@! I was wondering why it wasn't working. It was because the E: drive was offline, so I switched it online. Then it jumped to life. That's also why it was grayed out before. http://i63.tinypic.com/s6kajq.jpg Here's what's on the 1TB Seagate backup drive for the 8200: http://i65.tinypic.com/246rkbd.jpg Robert |

Probably room for a few more. Paul |

Yes, I didn't quite know how to
go about naming the backups. Here's what's on the 2TB drive: http://i65.tinypic.com/2iar49x.jpg Did you want me to do a image backup on the 8200/1TB drive? Robert |

P.s. Guess what? The Safely Remove icon
came back! Remember I was saying that what finally solved the problem was when you found the answer which was turning the drive back online which is what I did. Again you provided many links and helped me work through it. Is there anything else you would set up? I have a Rescue CD but should we make a new one? So from now on I only use the Image backup and nothing else? In passing, I notice other scans that Avast has: Smart Scan Scan for viruses Scan for browsers Add-ons Scan for outdated software Scan for network threats Scan for performance issues Should I run the others and if Avast find anything let it make changes? For example I ran the Smart Scan and this is what it found: http://i66.tinypic.com/6ypcno.jpg The Dell Update nag is still present Many Thanks, Robert |

Well you won't believe this but
the original problem has come back: Namely I can't eject the 2TB drive which why we turned the drive on/off to eject it but if I turn it offline to eject it I probably wont be able to turn it back on as before. http://i64.tinypic.com/71h8b7.jpg As you can see I closed everything and it still gave me the message. Robert What you back up, is a function of what you cannot afford to lose. If you want a means of restoring the 8200 after a malware attack, then backing it up some day might be a good idea. As for naming the files, it's purely up to you, whether you prefer the "randomly" named ..mrimg files, or the "named" .mrimg files. If you use the method recommended by Macrium, which is random naming, then I would suggest keeping a folder just for those, and designing your backup XML thing to point to that folder. Then, the folder name can be used to quickly determine what they might be for. What the purpose of the backups is. Macrium allows "comments" to be added to each backup image, but that's a damn nuisance to do for each backup. So I prefer to use either the filename or the foldername, to help organize them. You have to do something to make the files visually recognizable. Paul |

For example I ran the Smart Scan and this is what it found: http://i66.tinypic.com/6ypcno.jpg The Dell Update nag is still present Many Thanks, Robert I'm not all that trusting of software that automatically repairs things. I would need to read some articles or reviews of the product, to understand whether such features are positives or negatives. If you "scan for performance", get it to give you a report and *not* fix anything. Even for malware, I prefer a scanning tool to give me a name first. Just so I know how scared to be... :-) And not all updates are absolutely essential. Of the many hardware drivers on the computer, most are quite stable and not in need of help. If I was a serious 3D gamer (a new game every week), then I would be installing every video driver that the hardware company issued. As new games frequently don't play right, without the latest driver installed. The video card on my current machine, hasn't had a new driver for somewhere between 3 and 5 years. The Windows 10 setup has had more video drivers installed, because that driver is busted (throws errors). The OS has downloaded a steady stream of those drivers, burning up around 1GB of downloads. But for any older, stable stuff, I no longer worry about video card drivers. As far as the Rescue CD goes (that nag you get every time you start Macrium), you should test that the CD you currently have, boots on both machines. You don't have to do a test restore, to make sure it is fully functional, but you should at least see whether the computer will boot with the CD. That's how you figure out whether any additional work needs to be done on the CD. The version of CD should match the software. I keep a Macrium 5 CD for my Macrium 5 setup. I don't have a Macrium 6 CD. When I tested the Macrium 6 software, to understand how it works, I didn't need to make a CD for that setup. As I have no intention of switching to Macrium 6. For programs like that, I want "stability", so any .mrimg file on the machine, I know I can open it with any copy of Macrium 5 I have installed. Or, when I boot a Macrium 5 CD, I know it will work with all my Macrium 5 backups. (Sure, the software is probably backward compatible, but I'm not taking any chances.) Test your current CD, and make sure it boots. That's the bare minimum you should do with new media like that. If the CD is unreadable, and some day you need to boot that CD, you're not going to be very happy. Paul |

"Handles to Transactional NTFS files blocking external USB drive removal!" https://social.technet.microsoft.com...-drive-removal One person traced it to their Lenovo "TVT Backup Service". Is there still any Seagate backup software on the machine ? Check the "Programs and Features" control panel, and see if there is any backup software still installed (which might also have a service running). Like maybe a version of Acronis TIH. But you did tell me about some Seagate software that automatically installs from the other external drive, and maybe that software is still installed on Windows 7. The other item in the picture above, is Avast has a hook on the external drive. Paul |

I agree with you about all the fix-it-everything scans
but just wanted to show you what Avast had in case there was something that interested you. Before I try testing the Rescue disk I would prefer to resolve the current problem I'm having of the 2TB and the Safely Remove icon. I did however try it out on the 8200 by loading the disk and then restarting the computer but nothing happened. Should I have powered it off or changed the boot order? I thought it would detect the CD if working properly. Here's whats on the CD: http://i68.tinypic.com/2h8bg3l.jpg Robert |

I guess it is a popular topic
but I wonder why all of a sudden its happening now with other people? I don't have Seagate per se but I do have Sea Tools for Windows 1.4.0.2 Back to the question I asked earlier, is it possible to create a desktop Safely Remove icon to circumvent the system tray? Thanks Robert |
