Off Lease Dell Latitide with 32-bit Win 7 Pro
Hi,
(I posted on alt.sys.pc-clone.dell,but activity is low, so thought I'd ask here, too.) A friend's son needs a cheap (used is ok) laptop for email and browsing. I was looking at the off lease latitudes. I realize that these are heavy, the battery life is probably 'iffy', and there are cosmetic blemishes through use. The screen is anti-glare. I also know that these do not come with OS discs, but they do come with 32bit Windows 7 Pro. They come with a 100 day warranty, but a 15% rstocking charge if you return. I have some questions before I make a suggestion to my neighbor. Have any of you any experience with off lease latitudes? Since these are previously leased, is it likely that the recovery partition is still active so that one could make a copy of the installed OS? Could there be problems with activation? How old are these machines? They look like the same latitudes you get today, but with lesser processors from a few years ago. The ones that seem to fit his needs are the 15" E5530 at $177 and the 14" E5430 at $199. What I find interesting is that i3 or i5 processor/hard drive size/RAM size doesn't change the price as long as you stay within the same screen size Here's one I've been looking at: http://preview.tinyurl.com/za66u5c Comments? Have any of you any experience with off lease latitudes? Not exactly. I have experience with shopping and buying 'refurbished'. First I bought a refurb desktop through WalMart. It turns out to have been refurbed by a huge outfit in NJ called Joy. It/HP was shrink-wrapped, smelled like brand new, and was absolutely pristine, indistinguishable from brand new. The biggest difference from brand new was that the Win7 installed was completely free of bloatware and the Win7 Pro 64 disk and license which came with it was specially made for refurbers and acted like a regular Win7 install disk. That was such a great deal that I bought another one which was just like it, with some exceptions about the disk not being included; but I contacted Joy and they provided me with an .iso in addition to the restore partition. So, I was so impressed I continued to shop refurbs including at my local storefront Fry's. The salespeople there tried to steer me away from them, saying that the frequency of dogs was terrible and that so many of the sales were returned for problems. Those Fry's were described as off-lease Dells. I don't know how it works with Dell and their off-lease sales and which ones they 'dump' on such as Fry's. That is, maybe the hierarchy is Dell resale A cosmetic, Dell resale B cosmetic, Dell dump to big off-lease retailers like Fry's. In any case, my Joy refurbs were outstanding; and my reports on Fry's resale of Dell off-leases was terrible. -- Mike Easter |

Yes, I've since run into the E64 series. Worth the extra $$. Yes, we have a couple of E6410's here, expensive when new now cheap as plenty of ex-office machines on second hand market. Tough construction, easy battery replacement if needed, memory and video cards easy to get to. Many different variants were available when these were new, look out for one with a good video card and lots of memory and check that no passwords were set up for the bios or access to disks. The plus points for theses include (i) excellent keyboard and (ii) good bright screen - much better than equiv, Lenovo thinkpads from the same period. Ebay a good source for these. |
