Default Windows can't play wmv files.

Ever since I got rid of McAffee virus scan, my windows can't play wmv files
anymore.
My Windows Media Player won't even open(I reinstalled it about 3 times).
Whenever I try to play any movie file from media center, I get an error
message that says to restart either mediacenter or my computer but neither
works.
Also, Windows Media Player won't even open.

The only thing strange that I've noticed is that whenever I turn on my
comp, on the Desktop it says "Error: Active DL resource is missing" or
something like that.

Finally, the active desktop is always turned off and I can't turn it back on
by hitting the "Turn on Active Desktop" button. Nothing will happen so I have
to go to Properties and get my Desktop back manually.

Any ideas?

Default Windows can't play wmv files.

Run the "System File Checker" utility.
Open the Run box and enter:
sfc.exe /scannow

Re-install WMP. Go to C:\Windows\inf. Right-click the
following files and select "Install":

wmp.inf
wmp10.inf
wmp11.inf

or enter the following lines, one at a time into the Run box:

rundll32.exe setupapi.dll,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %WinDir%\inf\wmp.inf
rundll32.exe setupapi.dll,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %WinDir%\inf\wmp10.inf
rundll32.exe setupapi.dll,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %WinDir%\inf\wmp11.inf

I (and many of us here) have no idea what you mean by "none of the
above." Please always be sure to quote the previous messages in your
post (as I did your message above) so we can understand you.

I did all of the above steps and they didn't do anything. My windows media
player still won't open.
Also, I still get the error message when my computer starts.

Default Windows can't play wmv files.

Use Dial-A-Fix to repair your system.

After downloading, run Dial-a-fix.exe. Select everything in
section 5 (Registration center) then click the "Go" button.

You could also try the option "Repair permissions", found
in the window that pops up after clicking the button at
bottom that looks like a hammer.

Dial-a-fix 336 KB (Freeware)
